I need a new winter coat...

It's something I considered. Trouble is what I use it for. Early morning long commutes then late night return, so a very cold walk then the long train journey involves stripping everything off :D

Normally more layers makes for the best solution to give a wider range of possible temperatures to be comfortable in but for what you want it actually makes sense to have only one outer layer to take off.

Get yourself down to the local Army Surplus store, the one around here has RAF greatcoats for £35. Close to what Jack Harkness wears in Torchwood if you've ever seen it, but not a 40s one like his.

Sol is giving good advice :)

Erm...

For best value down gear try Alpkit. Although by the looks of it, such a demand that mostly out of stock.

PHD do very high quality stuff, one of the few (or the only?) place that still manufactures down gear in the UK since Rab moved their production overseas. Although Rab are still very good.

I've got a Haglofs primaloft hooded jacket which I look forward to using in Norway next month.

I suppose it comes down to how light/warm/cheap do you need it to be?

Try Blacks for decent winter clothing, staff in there tend to be quite knowledgable (spelling?) about that kind of thing. They spec'd me a coat and I've had it three years thus far :)

I was looking at Phd stuff before I bought my Lim Down vest and they are highly thought of. The only down side to their stuff is that it all seems to be a little plain on the styling front (not that it really matters of course :))

Alpkit are very good bang for the buck. Although I've no experience with their jackets per say the other things I've bought from them have been excellent value.

I thought about getting this one in the past:

North Face Plasma Thermal

I tried it out at a local store and it's quite cosy with the primaloft, it's waterproof, and it's not quite as bulky as a down jacket. Price isn't the cheapest I've seen so hunt around.

There's also this legendary ;) down jacket:

Mountain Equipment Lightline

Isn't anywhere near as bulky as it looks; seen quite a few folk with it going around Sainsbury's and the like. Again hunt for better prices.

I'd look into the blacks/millets/<insert standard name> shops but take everything you hear in there with a pinch of salt because they don't stock a wide range of brands and often they'll just try and sell you whatever.

Well I was thinking a bit like those long thick quilted coats you see them wearing at the arctic ideally,

Canada Goose > *

Unfortunately my Canada Goose Chilliwack Parka is too hot for anything above 5 degrees C :o

i have a greeat winter coat but it's made by quivksiler and only costs (i think) anout £130 - i have had it about 5 years though and not one seem has broke!

Debatable but Canada goose = 5 x more expensive than *, you could get three down jackets for the same price and wear them all at once ;). For walking to work/train use I don't think something even remotely that expensive/technical is required. I doubt very much the performance is even that great, especially for the price; they have a standard duck down jacket for about £500 which is crazy.

That's another point: the fill, quality and ratio of the feathers/down will make a difference to the performance of the jacket. For a decent explanation see here...

More XXXg = warmer/heavier/michelin man +1 and the colder the place where they plucked the geese/ducks the warmer the jacket.

Very true Sol. I just know I've never been cold whilst out and about. I just have the Chilliwack though which is a half-length/bomber jacket style, so not quite as heavy duty (and more than likely unpractical in the UK) as a Snow Mantra. :p

if you don't don a leather jacket you are not a man!

I picked up a khaki green jacket for work from Tesco the other week for £18.

Fleece lined, smart looking and very warm. I couldn't believe how warm. I was getting miffed with buying £100+ jackets that didn't keep me warm at all.

Definitely try some of the outdoors shops if you're after practical. My boyfriend has a Trespass jacket with a zip-in fleece that he got last year for about £30 (admittedly in the post-Christmas sale), but it looks decent and is nice and warm.
