Hi there,

Im giving up with my Netgear DG834N and wireless adapter Netgear WN311T. Using the router with an ethernet cable is fine, its the wireless side of thing that really lets it down. Not to mention the poor software that netgear uses.

Can someone recommend me a decent wireless router and adaptor please that will work on Vista64. Price range for both products up to £200.

So lets here what you have to recommend!

:)

Have a look at the Linksys routers , tbh ive always had a decent experance with Netgear and reccomend them

Linksys is Cisco. Netgear and Linksys make really decent kit, and either should be fine for your needs. It could be your house doesn't suit wireless. Mine has 2 staircases and that really seems to trash the wireless. I went to full cabled in the end. Pricey, yes, but Gigabit fast and totally secure within the building.

Never buy Belkin - just pain with their cheapo kit.

And be aware that there are some cheapo and nasty Linksys routers around. If it looks like a bargain, don't touch it. I have have two or three bad Linksys routers in the last six months. They have been cut down in price to try and compete with Belkin tatt, and it shows!!

Look at the wider range of routers as well. Don't just pick the cheapest one. The more expensive routers use different technology to better hold onto the signal and are worth the extra expense.

Netgear is always good - just head up the range when replacing your current router.

Try these two. I have had good results with both of these:

Get a Linksys WRT54* series, and flash it with the Tomato firmware. You should be able to get the router for sub £25 delivered and the firmware is free and very configurable - more so than the factory installed Linksys effort.

If you get a WRT54*, make sure it's a WRT54GL, or you won't be able to install Tomato...
Lack of Tomato support is what made the cheapo Linksys' routers I found hopeless. Stuck with naff firmware on a cheap box that couldn't be updated. And either it kept dropping the ADSL line or kept dropping the Wireless Connection. but that was from a £40 box... which included a free PCMCIA card... so not surprising it was carp.

(Yes - carp - not a sweary. And if you have ever tried to use a fish as a router you will understand my comment...:p)

Just to confirm my new Draytek Vigor 2820n is a quality piece of kit. You can tell the difference in quality compared to the netgear I had. Also no more dodgy netgear software to. The Draytek software works really well.

Wireless signal full strength and running at full speed using with Draytek Vigor N61 Wireless USB Adapter. Same for my mobile and GF’s laptop! :D

I guess its just a more professional product.
