I need a rig for myself...

Hello,

Firstly, I know absolutely nothing about computers. Yes, you read correctly, I registered here after catching my brother on the general discussion forums which looked really cool.

Ok, I need something basic, I don't play games. I'll only use it for school work and to access the internet. I want something that will just get my by I suppose, but I want something fairly fast.

I came across this on a website:

Intel Pentium 4 524 Processor

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center
1GB DDR RAM

It's priced at £200, should I go for it? Someone suggested that I could purchase the bits second hand and get a better deal.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated and sorry for my ignorance.

Go to Dell and buy a ready-made PC from there. For schoolwork and internet browsing, you won't need a high spec at all, and Dell will be your best bet pricewise.

Would you consider building a PC yourself?
I suppose that P4 unit would be alright for £200 if you were wanting a cheap pre-build as it has Windows already installed and saves hassle of putting it together.
It's not really the best though, already dated and in no way "future-proof," not that anything ever is these days...
Will it only be for schoolwork etc, or can you ever see yourself getting into games or whatever?

I can get my brother to put it together for me, if it would be any cheaper to buy the bits seperately.

I can't see myself playing games anymore, my CS days are long gone...I hope.

I only need the computer itself, there's a monitor doing nothing downstairs. I'll look into Dell though, thanks.

if its only for schoolwork and not for any games or anything then that pc for £200 isnt too bad..

thats more than enough for browsing etc

to be fair you probally wouldn't save more than a few quid buying that 2nd hand anyway.

ive seen that pc for £200 ive had a few in were i work, and for the money u carnt go wrong as you would find it hard to build a pc like that with a genuine operating sytem for the £200 if all u are going to do is internet and lite gaming its a good pc.
