I have a period of two months or so during which I plan to play a computer game.

I want something that involves intelligent, thought provoking gameplay and dialogue with an aesthetic that touches on science fiction. Something that takes me far away from the reality of sitting at a computer. I love aspects of fictional fast paced action combined with slower more intimate and intuitive fundamentals of human nature. Something that involves art in a broad sense of the word.

Am I asking too much? I hope not. Shall I just read a book by Phillip.K.Dick? No.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My PC can handle anything and I'm not fussed about playing games up to 4 years old.

Thanks Chid, I was looking at ME before. It seems like 2 is the only one worth playing, is that right? Also have you played it and can you tell me why it's good if you have. Thanks

I would say they are all worth playing. ME1 was good but I didn't really have the time to complete it even though I got a good chunk through it. ME2 was epic, great story and characters mixed with some good action and rpg elements and I played it to the end. ME3 I have only played a little of just due to having too many good games, it's hard to fit them all in!
But from the description of what you are looking for, I can't think of any other games that fit the bill (although some others may have some suggestions) and you certainly wont be wasting your time playing the trilogy. In fact, I'm would love to have never played the trilogy and sit down for an extended period of time to discover what they have to offer.

Have you considered X3: Terran Conflict? I don't think the dialogue would blow you away, but visually it's quite stunning and has extremely in depth gameplay.

It's not essential to play all of them, but they are all good and given that you have 2 months to play them you will have time to get through all of them.

It's a 4x game played in first person, although there is a reasonable amount of management. Depending on what type of player you are, it could be extremely immersive or unbelievably dull. Not as easy to get into as something like Mass Effect, but if you do, those two months will disappear!

Also, if you want some interesting gameplay, check out antichamber. It's a puzzle game with no dialogue at all, so doesn't really conform to your requirements other than having "intelligent, thought provoking gameplay".

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. They both seem really interesting and like worthy games of further investigation. I'm going to suggest something to myself and say Bioshock 1? Has anyone played it? In something that I read recently it appeared between Baldurs Gate 2 and Halflife 1 in a ranking list within the top 5 games of all time. As far as I'm concerned any game that falls within those two must be something. Or perhaps the list was a load of rubbish. Any thoughts?

I lost my save half way through (Bioshock) and never went back to complete it. It's probably good and I'm sure many other people would recommend it, but it certainly has nothing on Half Life. :)

Definitely play ME trilogy, all three are very good and well worth playing....some of the best games ever made to be honest.

ME has good story, lore and the dialogue should suit your needs.

ME1 and ME2 are fantastic. ME3 lost its way big time, to easy, no atmoshphere, its more 80% shooter and 20% RPG. Crying shame oh and it was dumbed down even more.

Is Mass Effect a 'deep' game? I have the impression that it's aimed at a young generation. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I wouldn't say it was deep, despite having a lot of stuff to do it is still quite a linear game. It is basically Dragon Age in space though so you could add that to your list as well :) Origins over 2 as well.

I would suggest Fallout New Vegas, very highly rated and has the sci fi element of course.

I would also suggest only going for ME2, the others failed to hold me enough to complete them but for me, the second one is in a class of its own above the others.

Also, not sci fi but seemingly right up your street, we have Witcher 2. Very very classy RPG.
