Hey i have a compaq presario SR1879UK (Spec Here) with an AMD X2 4200+, but from what i hear it is suppose to be quite fast alough it is running at 2.2GHZ i need to know if there are some settings i can change to make it run faster or if there is any way to unlock the bios so i can overclock it?

if you need any more information please ask i will answer if i can :p

It'll just be the highly limited BIOS of the Presario. Any idea what chipset its based on? Try using Sisoft Sandra or Everest to find out :)

If you can find out what motherboard you are using you could simply reflash the BIOS with a general "unlocked" one. The hard bit will be to find out the motherboard make and model no. Maybe this information is in your startup screen (POST screen) or within the bios. SiSoft or Everest as suggested by the previous poster may give some more clues. Simply updating the chipset drivers will not "unlock" your BIOS.

If it is a propriety motherboard (I dunno about these or if they exist!) then you are probably stuck. You could be lucky and find a customised(hacked) BIOS somewhere but personally I think it would be stupidly risky flashing a new BIOS from a unreliable unproven source. Also need to bear in mind if you do find a suitable BIOS to reflash your board you may invalidate your warranty.

Just looked at your jpg.... your mobo looks like a MSI AMETHYST-M so I would take a look at the MSI website and see what bios downloads they have. A brief read around gives me the impression that you may not be able to overclock much due to HP using parts whoose quality is not best suited for an oc. Also lots of people mention voiding of the warranty etc. One possible way around this is to keep a copy of the original bios (your current one) which you should do anyway and if you have any problems which requires a return simply reflash the original bios back and you will probably still get away with a warranty repair. This idea will fail if your mobo or memory fails I suppose as you will be unable to reflash the bios. Anyhow check out the MSI website for the latest bios and also if you decide to go ahead with this I would also download the latest chipset drivers as well. Read up on how to flash your bios carefully. Personally I do not flash my bios from windows, I do it either from within the bios itself or from DOS.

The HP bios is purposely locked to prevent overclocking. This means they can provide simpler tech support and get less warranty returns due to "burnt out" parts.

You could try one of the Windows based overclock utilities. I can't remember the name of them but there are a few around. Hopefully someone can remember the name?
