Ok... I've pretty much decided sensible is boring.
I'm after a new car and have... hopefully cut the list down to the following...

Focus ST-2 (3dr)
VW Golf GTi (3dr)
VW Golf GT TDI 170 (3dr)
Mini Cooper S (R56/MY2007)

I've yet to drive the Cooper S (duh) and the Focus ST.

I've pondered it over and over in my head and I really can't decide, all the above would be around the same purchase cost/insurance. The Cooper S and GT TDI would be better on the fuel. They're all cracking cars...

What would you do?

Fox wants me to get a 330d btw y0!

Between Focus & Mini.

I would have the Cooper S Works or Focus. Leaning towards Mini because of the residuals. But the build quality isnt great according to a friend who had one.

Ah yes, I forgot the new gen mini is out. That would really tempt me if I was in your position, even though it doesnt come with Works yet.

But like said above, go and test drive. See what you think of them both. Just don't go with the Golf its too bland as Fox said on IRC. They all look the same.

I could see the options list of the mini hurting too :)

Driven the VWs, very nice, very dependable and the look is growing on me (Steel Grey!). The only prob is that you need about £2k of options to get your Xenons etc.

The Cooper S is really tempting, loved the old one but it might be a bit impractical.

You kinda know what I think :p

It'd be a hard choice between the ST and Golf GTI... I really don't know what I'd have. Probably the GTI, just.

Fox is right BTW :p

The E46 330d Coupe is a beast of a car with enough torque to keep on pulling and pulling.

Of the others you have mentioned i would choose the Focus, i have had a Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia and albeit not an ST-2 they drive very well for a FWD car, you can reallt "throw" them around corners :D

The Mini Cooper S has awful suspension and if your above 5' 10" then you have no chance of a comfortable ride.

The VWs i have no experience of so cannot comment on.

So to recap, E46 330d all the way

Cheers :)

thats nearly 20k you have to spend there im guessing.. thats...

S2000
Porsche Boxster
VX220 Turbo
Lotus Elise
NSX (abit older)
RX8
RX7 (obv older)
P1 Impreza
etc etc money....

can't say if I had that much to spend that id be looking at a golf, mini, or a focus...

granted, you have chosen some practical cars, so RX8 might be the most practical from my list...

I agree! You said you decided sensible is boring but you've typed in Focus, Golf and mini? Spend the 20k on something amazing :p
