I got a new laptop today, which has been working perfectly, but I needed to get into Local Settings, so I clicked on My computer > C:/ > Documents and Settings, but I couldn't see the folder, so I right clicked, went on properties and ticked "Hidden folders" and stupidly applied it to all folders, subfolders and files.

After that, I could see Local settings, but now everything is messed up. Firefox won't work properly because it says something about a security problem, Outlook Express wont open at all and is full of errors, wireless network has stopped working, etc.

Could this all be caused by me faffing around with the hidden folders in Documents and Settings?

The only other thing it could be is CCleaner, which I used to tidy the registry, etc.

Please help!

I have tried restoring, but it's still coming up with errors on everything.

Update:
I just went back into Documents and Settings, right clicked, went to properties then unticked the read only box and applied it to all folders, subfolders and files and all is back to normal now.

Can someone tell me if the Documents and Settings folder should be read only and will it effect anything if it is unticked?

You'll probably find if you go back and check again, it will still be read-only. It's not really read-only so don't worry about it.

You're right, it is still read only - it's not ticked, but it now has a bold block in the box.
Everything seems to be OK now.

Strange how it caused so much trouble before...
