I need help

Hi, just recieved my new motherboard, cpu and ram today.

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H
Intel i5 3570k
Kingston Hyper X DDR3

Fitted the parts, booted up the pc and windows will not boot, I get an option to repair or start windows normally. When I pick repair it says it cant repair automatically and when I choose start windows normaly it just reboots. Ive tried booting using the windows 7 disc but it doesnt work. I literally dont know what to do and im mega ****ed. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

I always tend todo a fresh install when changing components to stop issue with drivers ect.

Did you back up all your important data.
 
Upgrading usually means re-install. The only time I got away with it was going from a P67 to a Z68 board last year and I was amazed it worked.

You could install to another drive to get into windows if there's anything you need to grab. When you re-install windows the old user folders and program files etc are untouched but anything in windows is nuked and software that needs registry entries etc will need to re-installed. Other data that's on the drive is left untouched though.

Shorter version:
Just re-install windows if you can live with having to re-install programs too. Everything else is safe.

Im installing windows now but will installing it just replace the current windows with no issues? I seriously didnt know a fresh install was needed. I havent backed anything up, nothing important tho I just game

Installing Windows again is going to wipe your disk so your games will be gone unless installed on a separate disk or partition.

Even then a lot of them probably wouldn't work with a fresh installation.
 
Hmm not so good, especially when it comes to downloading all my games off steam again. Ah well theres only one way to learn, the hard way
 
No need to install again.

Most likely and i am really surprised no one mentioned this already is that your
in AHCI mode and previously you were in IDE mode.
Go to the SATA settings in the BIOS and set mode to IDE then your old windows will boot.

There are reg setings you can change to set your windows to use AHCI so you could change back, but you need to get booted up first.

edit: I see you have re installrd windows.
That wasn't necessary hope you haven't lost anything.

Oh........Im currently about 80% complete on the re-install although it has come to a complete standstill the last few minutes. I assume at this point theres nothing I can do now
 
Ah well thats windows installed and everything gone :eek: I always wanted to give my hdd a spring clean just not in this fashion, Im dreading downloading all them games again. Must admit tho im notice a good increase in speed compared to the old phenom 965 so it aint all bad

You know if just copy your old steam folder into your new one it will save you a lot of time.

You will probably need to verify data files for your games but it will be much quicker than downloading them again.
 
Thats what im currently doing going through my windows.old folder, its going to take a while tho. Thanks anyways to everyone who posted, appreciated.

Windows doesn't wipe the disk unless you ask it to.

As per every windows install since win95 it will point out there's an existing install on the disk and ask if you want to over-write/delete it.

With vista and beyond there's a chance they may demand the disk wiped if so, say no, install somewhere else.

Well - I notice from above now you got ur disk wiped. I can 100% say that I can always work out (from it telling me) when that's going to happen and have never lost data from a disk with any version of windows for about 15 years.
