hi

is it a case of getting a cheap router and connecting it to the SH?

i need the SH lan ports active still because i need 1 Gigabit port for my NAS drive

i only need 1 extra port for tivo box
my pc and NAS and slingbox would stay in the SH. the tivo box and samsung tv would be in the switch

If you only need a few extra 100mbit then just get a cheap 10/100. Yes another gigabit switch would be better and more future proof, but until your internet and devices are all 100mbit+ then theres no real need, and in theory gigabit switches will be cheaper then :)

I've got my SH into a gigabit switch upstairs, then a cable running downstairs into a 10/100 cheap switch, does a great job.

Hi Gareth,

What you want is a switch mate.

Have one cable going from the router to any port on the switch. Then you can plug in 4 devices into the switch (assuming it's a 5 port switch).

The DHCP server in the router will automatically assign the IP's correctly, it will just 'work'.

If you get a 10/100 switch, then you'll be limited to 100 on all devices that connect to the switch.

i have 5 devices, samsung tv which is 100, tivo which is 100, slingbox which is 100, pc which is 1gigbit, WD NAS which is 1gigbit

so what i would do is keep the pc / WD NAS / tivo in the SH then connect the tv and slingbox to the switch. or i may connect the tv / tivo / slingbox to the switch and keep the pc / WD NAS in the SH, so i have 1 free gigbit port but i don't think i'd use it.

anyway i'm at skegness since 18th till saturday, so i will ordering when i get back.
