I need no protection!!!

Firewalls and AVs are like condoms. If you careful and make sure that everyone you sleep with are trusted and clean then it's unlikely that you'll get an STD. But if you're promiscuous and sleep with anyone you find then don't be surprised if it burns while you pee.

I've had an AV installed for years, but I've not actually had anything detected for years either. Do I need it? Probably not, but it's that one time when that cute girl looks respectable but is actually rather slutty that you need to be weary of, in which case it's always prudent to be protected.

Nice analogy :D But where does "virtual sex" fit into it? I.e. virtual machines ;)

That's like sleeping with your Italian Mafia parents next door. You're always too concerned about getting caught for anything to actually happen. And if it did, everything would be taken 'care' of.

If you download Torrents or any other kind of P2P activity I'd highly, highly recommend getting a virus scanner.

A low-resource virus scanner such as AVG will make no performance dent on your computer, and can save a lot of heart ache potentially.

If you never run virus scans you cannot claim that you have never had a virus, chances are you simply wouldnt know if you had a random trojan installed or something similiar.

All this being said, I can honestly say nobody cares enough about you, or your computer, to try and persuade you to get some kind of AV software. In fact, judging by your posts I would be cheering on the virii to infect your 'top of the line' pc.

Speak for yourself there, if he gets a virus then he'll post here, and people will help because we're nice like that.

Oh and it's viruses not virii ;)

As most people have said, you should be fine. But most of us just like the peace of mind that an AV program gives us. They take up hardly any memory compared to how powerful PCs today are, and its better to be safe than sorry.

I've not had NOD report any viruses since I got it, but I keep it there, well trained and watching my back. Besides, you never know what'll happen if you go out and have one too many to drink, or your friend tries to use your PC, or something.

If you excercise sensible browsing methods, then you won't need an AV scanner or Adaware app. I've been using PC's since the Windows 3.0 days without any of these programs and I've never ever had a virus at all.

If you got common sence you need no AV.
Firewall I'd recommend to have at least the Windows one turned on, wouldn't be too comfy with no fw at all.
Anti spyware scan once per 6 months is usually enough, no need for constant protection, unless you haven't got any common sence.

Av is always noticable on any pc unless you got a solid state drive.
Your hdd's will be a lot slower if the AV scans everything you go into or open.
Although some minimize the effects ( eg. nod32) and are hardly ( but still) noticable, others are quite poor als slow down your pc a lot ( Kaspersky, Norton). Have a normall hdd like a 4 year old wd caviar and a lot of AV's are highly annoying.

How do you know?

A very valid point was made earlier. If you have no AV, how do you know that you have no viruses?

A good point yes, but I think I know my OS installs well enough to recognise when even the smallest thing is amiss. Just like the OP I tend to keep an eye on every process, service of the OS. I'm one of those guys who hates bloat and is forever cutting down on useless processes. I'd easily spot if something was wrong.

if u haven't had a AV/Adaware apps ever, how do u know u haven't got virus or ad/spyware??

Never had any viruses or spyware.
How do you know? A well written malware application is not an attenion seeker.

Instead I keep track on what is happening in my processes task bar.
Not all malware appear in the list of processes. Some may even take the name of ( or inject their own code into ) an existing, legitimate process.

So, tell me why do I need any protection
Humour us by running a couple of online scans and reporting back. Truthfully! :p

Some seemingly legitimate programmes like to "call home" which a decent firewall will alert you about too.
