I need no protection!!!

Hey,

No bragging post, instead I hope someone can convince my to install protection programs ;)
Just want to squeeze as much power out of my system, and I believe that Firewall, and antivirus will degrade performance while running.

Maybe only lucky so far or is the Virus threat slightly exaggerated ?

of course its a bragging post

like somebody on here is going to convince you to install an AV package considering you've just pointed out so high and mightly (repeatedly i might add) you dont need one ?

I can guarantee that if you install a decent antivirus and antispyware scanner it will find something. There is no way on the planet an unprotected Windows machine can survive long in the jungle without protection. ;)

But then again, if it is just a gaming rig (and your credit card goes nowhere near it) and performance has obviously not been affected, why worry.

recently my sister inlaw bought a prebuilt pc from the local high st store, nice enough pc with some 30 day trials on it i.e norton!
she said can you help me connect to the internet as my husband(my borther) is away working,
no problem i say, so i go round the house sort things out and first things first start sorting her pc, took off norton and went to avg, within 1 hour of being online avg had pulled up a dozen or so viruses and trojan horses, i was like hmmmmmm ok
after a few days of the just not working properly we took back to the store, they sorted it and gave it us back. so i decided ok without connecting to internet i will install my legit copy of kaspersky (but not regsiter) as i wanted to purely scan, guess what more virus.
now this is from "a clean install" as i was told by the bearded man in the store
so we dont need to be connected to internet for us to have virus!!!!!
she now has full copy of kaspersky that we bought from our friends here at OC thanks guys and a pc that works sweet!

Money back guarantee? If so I may take you up on that :D:p:)

My PC's have been doing perfectly fine for many years without firewall, antivirus and antispyware installed. Those 3 adware cookies found did nothing to the system.

I strongly believe that if you dont open unidentified mails, visit trusty websites only and dont download software except patches there is no need for any protection.

I am sorry if it sounded like a bragging post. That was not my meaning.

in which case ..

I agree btw. I run Avira Antivirus, but it never finds anything.

I dont use anything else, and only have the AV because i'm in the habit of downloading dodgy stuff off p2p programmes and you can never be too carefull with what you download.

i haven't bothered with software protection for years. i usually keep that fact to myself nowadays as you'll only get flamed......

"apparently i'm a part of spambot network and i don't even know it"
"everyone in my address book is at risk due to my negligence"
"sites that you trust to download files from could be compromised"

and so on.....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

i just hide behind my router, keep windows upto date and don't download rubbish. it's not hard. :)

Why are people incapable of understanding that downloading an running a file is not the only way malware spreads, and is in fact one of the least common ways that virri infects computers?

Those who "keep Windows up to date" and run a NAT firewall and think they're safe are laughable.

come on then, do explain. if it's "laughable", then you obviously know better than i do. please enlighten me. :)

I seem to remember a piece of, i think javascript or something possibly, and it logs into your router using the default password etc etc (which is normally just "admin" or password", and then it changes your router's settings to brick it. Our BTVoyager router has the 192.168.0.1 log in page, but it comes with a random password which is unique to each box.

I use Vista 64bit, just leave defender and firewall turned on other than that I dont bother. As people have said I have enough common sense one what to click on, if i need to download anything suspect, i just use a virtual machine

Hi,

I have never used any Firewall, anti spy ware and anti virus programs.
I am on my fourth PC, just finished building it last December. Top of the line, Q6600 running at 3.6 GHZ, 8800 ultra, 4 gig mem, pc power&cooling 750psu etc. In my PC career I have never used any programs to protect my PC. In my latest XP and VISTA installations I have disabled all unnecessary services.
My VISTA configuration runs with 23 processes at start-up. Never crashed once. I use the PC for gaming only, online mostly. No blue screen. Everything rock stable.
14400 in 3dmark 06.
Never had any viruses or spyware. Instead I keep track on what is happening in my processes task bar.
So, tell me why do I need any protection ;)

OK..im exactly the same...didnt realise it was that big a deal to make a thread about it lol

As with most of us I guess, I read this forum on a daily basis and I have never ever seen so many posts recently asking about AV scanners, viruses and security issues.

There are so many daft rumours going around about Vista that it defies belief. Our IS department is scared of the OS outright claiming that it is unsecure... Now either people are overreacting to the fact that Vista is BAD and apparently unsecure, or a lot more people are moving to Vista and are wanting to know if their current AV package works on the OS, which it clearly should otherwise its crap.

gronbeck do you use a router?

if so, i have the same setup as you, but just incase i've run spybot immunize & spywareblaster

firefox & adblock plus & not visiting crap, and never using outlook helps a lot

Corrected for you ;)

People who run a fully patched Vista machine with a NAT router, have decent interent privicy setting and are very careful about where they visit have only a very, very small chance of ever getting a virus.

I am not sure just how safe things are really. I got one or two awkward viruses last year and upgraded my free av and fw to Kaperskpy. Now I haven't had anything picked up but Kapersky does check incoming mail and has quarantined a number as suspect malware. These are mails coming in as spam mail. Whether I needed the action Kapersky took por not, I think it feels safer with it there.

Actually I am behind NATS so I suppose the firewall is not so important.
