Hello,

I went down to the market the other day and they told me that I would have to purchase speaker wire with the necessary impedance on the internet. I have Sony Speakers - I do not want to lose sound quality though but I do need to extend them so I can put them on my speaker brackets.

Please could somebody explain what I need and what I should expect to pay (GDP) and how I would attach it...

Thanks and Kind Regards,

Ben

Sony Model Number SS-XB200
Rated Impedance: 6n
CEK/CED/CET/U

(These are the things on the speaker label :-) )

Speaker cable with the necessary impedance, is a load of nonsense. Sounds like something a salesman would say in the hope of selling more expensive cable.

Depends on the distance, but you don't want cable too thin for longer runs. Any cable with a core of 1.5mm is more than adequate enough for anything but really long runs.

£1-£2 per meter for oxygen free copper cable is about right. Cambridge Audio Symphony 200 will be fine. There are some cheaper cables on eBay, but some of them are copper plated aluminium, which may be inferior, but it will certainly work. Can't say whether it is inferior as I've never tried any.

As for connecting the cables, usually the sheathing on one of the cables is marked so you know which cable is which when it comes to connecting to the speakers and stereo. As long as it's constant both ends, the colour is irrelevant. If you connect the unmarked wire to red on the speaker then you want that the same on the stereo. Looking at a picture of the speakers, they will be spring clips. You just pull the plastic tab down to release or insert the bare end of the cable.
