Hi Guys,

I have never backed up any files on my web store!

Just now it took me a real long time to back it up by hand. Cutting and pasting every product description, product photo, product description html, customer contact details and addresses etc. I did all that but what is the proper way of backing it all up? So I can integrate it later. When I redo my store. As currently I am planning on making a major site overhaul.

I only have 24 hours, well actually about 14 hours left. I really need some help quick, I am using oscommerce and paypal.

Many thanks in advance

Do a backup through the control panel of hosts site. It'll probably be cPanel as said above.

If www.yourdomain.com:2082 doesn't work then try www.yourdomain.com/cpanel/

many thanks for your replies,

I have just checked out my cpanel and clicked on backups, I then chose an email address and pressed full backup. Now it says full backup in progress. Below it says that backups will be sent to my email address. It's that's all that's needed to do?

How long will the back up take? My site is small with 22 products.

Lastly will a created tar.gz appear in my email?

Many thanks in advance

EDIT: Okay it was very quick, I didn't recieve the tar.gz in an email just a bunch of text that I don't understand but I found on the previous page of the back up process a completed rar of the tar.gz, I downloaded it. It has a size of 13.4MB. What do I do with this now?

Go to your new host and through cPanel on there select backups > then restore and then point it at the tar.gz file when it asks for location. If all is well it will upload the file, decompress and restore it as it was on your original site.

As long as the .tar.gz is on your harddrive you should be fine backup wise.

If you do re-upload it to a new host you will most probably have to adjust the file paths in oscommerce's config file.

Guys, many thanks for your replies

So now if I upload into the cpanel of my next hosting provider I will have all my customer contact details back, but what if I will not be using oscommerce anymore?

I cannot access my account at my domain provider, because as you know my web hosting providers yearly account has expired. I tried using my domain providers forgotten password form but then remembered that the email account registered with them I won't be able to gain access to as their hosted on my hosting providers account which has expired. Are there any other ways that I could get access into my emails temporarily?

I tried calling my domain provider and it's quite a bit of work, I need to get some documents and photocopy them, my copier isn't working at the moment. And they say I would need to send these documents by post to prove my identity and then they will give me a new password. I really need access to my emails now and I don't want to pay just yet for another year with my hosting provider. Is there any other ways?

Please help

Many many thanks in advance

Sounds like you need to talk miore with your diomain provider. It very seems weird that they'd make you send documents in when you've had an account with them. If it's a case of you not wanting to pay then you're probably out of luck, as they just try to charge you for a backup restore.

Back up often, it takes a couple of minutes with cpanel! :)

you can still view the oscommerce database contents using something like phpmyadmin
