I Need To Replace My Dad's 8800 GT

As title my dad's graphics card has packed in and I need something cheap with at least the same level of perfomance or a little bit better.

He had an EVGA 8800GT 512MB Superclocked Crysis Edition.

I liked the old days when a higher number meant a faster card but it doesn't seem to these days and I'm confused.

Would the GT 430 on special this week do?

He only has that card because I gave him it last time I upgraded. :)

His budget is about £50 max I'd say.

I suppose the other option is I take the £50 and add cash to it to buy myself a new card. Then he could have my HD 4870XT but I'm still running an E6600 and am trying to cobble together £300 for an I5 setup before bothering about graphics.

I was wary of upgrading my graphics as my cpu is probably bottlenecking the 4870 as it is.

If your budget is £50 then you're probably better off looking at used cards on the member's market - plenty of 8800s go for around £30 there.

For £50 best to pick up a 4870 or a GTX 260 of the Member's Market here. Their price is getting quite close to a second hand 8800 card :p

So to sum up:

Get my dad a GTX260 and try to ignore the severely tempting Sapphire 6850 2gb until I get a better rig?

wait for the new rig and see how amd does with the 7 series later in the year

got money in my paypal and nearly picked up a 560 gtx or ti this week and everytime thought i bet i will regret this and changed my mind and my 4870 plays all i want atm

Spent my money on an I5, mobo and 8gb ram instead.

Back on topic though, I've posted in the members market asking for a GTX 260 but now my dad says his top budget is £70. He's playing Mass Effect 2 atm so needs something that can comfortably run that at the least.

Does that change the recommendations at all?

Edit: I think I might buy him the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 that's on special this week. It's only £7 over his budget.

I told him he'd get better performance from a second hand card but he says he'd prefer one with a warranty just in case it packs in.
