So the other day I got this error message when randomly browsing files on my dekstop's HDD:
Everything on the internet suggested the drive was on its way out, so I attached a backup disk and retrieved everything I wanted to keep. During this process I noticed only a handful of files were still actually accessible via the file system in the normal way.
After this, I rebooted the PC. This time, the original disk was fine, but the backup disk was inhibiting the same behaviour. I can't see anything on the internet regarding this; it could be a coincidence and both drives are on their way out, but could it also be a problem with the SATA controller? I haven't updated the SATA driver for years because Intel hasn't updated it in years, so I highly doubt it's a driver issue.
The desktop HDD has since passed a 5 hour chkdsk run and SMART data for both drives is also fine.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
