I really need help with this question about watt usage please!

Heya, so I’ve got another question. I’ve estimated my future PCs maximum watt usage to be 909 (used PC part picker then multiplied it by 1.5) and with a monitor, mouse and keyboard to be around 940 at most. My question is that if I have a 1000W PSU and UPS will that be enough? Do I need to worry about plugging phones, etc in the UPS? Or Bluetooth adapters, accessories, etc into the PC? And what happens if it goes over? This might sound silly but I’m new to all this haha.

What are you planning to do with the system that could make it pull its maximum load for any length of time? it’s highly unlikely to ever occur in day to day software / gaming

Nothing, but isn’t it a requirement to have something over what your output is? I’m thinking it’ll be just fine but I wanted to make sure

Does your area suffer from power outages?

Yeah it does unfortunately, it’s not super common but it’s flickered enough times over the years to where I’d need a UPS + some blackouts.

I had a 1500VA UPS it was enough for about 45 minutes of runtime, granted it's lower power than modern machines, but UPS's are there just to shut down the computer. Not sit there completing RDR2 in battery mode.

Buy a plug in watt meter they're about £10 and you get an idea how much you'll need. Remember when power goes off, drop to desktop and shut it down..

Haha yeah I know, I just need a few mins to shut it down really. What do you mean by a watt meter? I don’t have the pc yet and I’m going to buy a UPS at the same time. Since I’m already high balling the watts of the build it should be fine to go ahead with the 1000W right?

900 watts? What are you putting in it? That is very unlikely!

You would not normally buy a UPS to cope with your PC under full load, only when idle or under light load.

Yeah I get that, I’m more just worried that if I don’t get a UPS with more power than the PC will have that it would cause some issues. I can’t see myself using that much watts realistically. Do you think this model will be good?

It’s the only 1000W one with good reviews I can find. I honestly just want to pick a UPS and call it a day lmao. I appreciate the help

Spend a tenner and see how much power your PC uses first.

But is there much point in that? Because if I already know the maximum output I’d be better off getting one now. Plus I’d have to wait a week to actually use my PC if I got it after.

Just because a PSU is 1000W doesn't mean you need a 1000W PSU nor will you be using 1000W, nor that you need a 1000W UPS (or correct method is KVA, like very high amount)

You're willing to spend £400 on a UPS but not a tenner on a power usage meter?

With the power meter you can determine just how large (or small) a UPS you need. If you overspend why do would you need 45 minutes run time? Literally 5 minutes, max. Maybe worst case scenario is NAS is rebuilding an array etc where you can't switch the NAS off..

I get what you’re saying. It’s not that I’m unwilling to try this, it’s just that if I’ve established that the absolute maximum output is around 900W then surely I’d want to go above that and get a 1000W UPS? I don’t see why a less powerful UPS would be useful when I’d then need to make sure the PC Doesn’t go into that 900W range.

What are the exact specifications of your PC and what do you intend to do with it, gaming or workloads?

You don't need an UPS unless you're in an area with frequent power outages, certainly not when your main use case is gaming.

As for your rig, a 7800X3D/4070ti Super combo would run quite happily on a decent 650W PSU, you're greatly overestimating your power usage.

Yeah unfortunately we do get a fair bit of power flickers. I’ve switched to the RTX 4080 Super now btw. I think I’m confused about how this works. My maximum usage is around 900W so why would a 650W PSU be enough? I don’t want to limit how much capability I can use. Does the smaller watt just mean it’ll run the pc for less time? (Btw I can’t reply anymore since I have a 15 post limit for a new account)
