...but they don't seem to want to let me.

Basically I'm trying to buy the DLC for Fallout 3 which first of all requires that I update the Games for Windows Live client which is simply refusig to update returning the error 0x80072741 after a few seconds of doing nothing. I went to the gfwl support site and downloaded the update tool which runs successfully but whenever I load up Fallout 3 it is still asking me to the gfwl client.

Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution? Perhaps I'm just going about this the wrong way...

Do you by chance have xfire installed and two network ports on your machine? I had this obscure problem, solved it by exiting xfire, disabling unused network ports/connections and re-launching the GFWL client. Once you've logged in that first time, you can then carry on as normal with xfire etc. Very weird problem!

Seriously wait for the retail disks, its too much hassle at the moment.

I don't have x-fire installed but I do have two network ports however the onboard NIC is disabled in the BIOS so it shouldn't have any effect should it?

With regards to waiting for them, I did look into that option but any of the places I looked at online seem to be selling the DLC for more than what it costs to download. Added to that the inconvenience of the extra discs (Steam has spoiled me and I really am running out of room) and the wait factor (I've already waited and was looking forward to another playthrough during the summer with the added content) I just don't want to buy the retail copies. There's also no guarantee that the retail copies would work anyways as they'd still require GFWL which is at the root of the problem here. I'm going to re-install the game tonight to see if that has any effect but I was hoping to avoid it, oh well.

Success!!!!!!!!1111!1!!!!!!!111!111!111!

L33, your suggestion about the network cards gave me an idea, I disabled both and connected via a Huwaweieieieieiei mobile broadband dongle thingy and the GFWL client updated immediately.

Microsoft really musn't want my money though as they have designed the most user unfriendly, unintuitive program going, took me ages to figure out how exactly to get to the market place. Having followed breadcrumbs accross the internet I've now figured out that it must be launched from within the game itself.

Anyways, thanks for the help guys.

Or check this as a lot of routers have strict NAT which can cause issues (BT Home hub especially). It seems a lot of routers are resetting NAT settings nowadays back to strict which causes a lot of problems for some games.

Can you connect to LIVE within Fallout3 ?? if not you need to enter your game serial key in the popup box which appears. If yes then go to the network section on the far righthand side and it will tell you if you have strict NAT or not + you also need Upnp enabled in your firewall.

Also check your firewall settings to ensure that GFWL client & fallout3 are both allowed through.

Do you have the latest GFWL client installed??

Finally if all this fails just go to the official GFWL forums as the MS staff can help you further and even have a Fallout3 specific tech help section.

Or here there is more comprehensive self help support:

99% of the GFWL issues are related to strict security & firewall settings on your PC. As you get an error code this will be very easy to fix.

Thanks AWPC, that's a great post which basically sums up everything I've done so far (Even now I still think that it could have been the security settings on the router considering the other modem worked but I could have sworn I had everything set up right).

After much shouting of loud profanities however, I now have all three of the DLCs downloaded but you should definitely keep that post in reserve for anyone else who has similar problems as it really does sum up nicely all the possible solutions.
