My RAM decided to play up a few weeks ago and as part of the repair process I decided to do a full Vista re-install. What a ball-ache that was.

Anyhoo, when Windows had done its stuff, I was somewhat taken aback when the Windows loading tune came out of the TV when the login screen popped up for the first time. My GTX275 was still hooked up to the SPDIF header as I had previously tested to see if I could get audio over HDMI.

I use a now aging Sony 32D3000 as a monitor. I run DVI>DVI from the card to a DVI splitter then a DVI>HDMI cable from the splitter to the TV.

I always thought no sound would be carried by a DVI cable, only video? Perhaps this is all obvious and I'm stupid but if someone could claify that would be great.

Cheers.

Most cards these days, the DVI carries HDMI signals. This is because not all cards have a HDMI port, so they usually come with a DVI -> HDMI adapter. Don't worry, it's normal ;)

Most video cards that support HDMI but only have DVI-I ports will transmit audio using DVI. Given that DVI and HDMI are the same specification this makes sense, especially seeing as you get DVI to HDMI cables/converters.

I would assume that the reason you are getting audio is that the card is seeing the HDMI device as HDMI and not DVI at the other end.
