Hello dudes.

I have been out of the PC making game for a while now and all this dual core/PCI-E/64-bit nonsense is all new to me.

I had a quick look around OCUK to see how much I could build myself a great PC for (doesn't have to be an amazing PC)
And I came up with this, I think it will all fit together (and yes, those are all the parts I'd need)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.60GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail = £112

Asus M2V (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard = £47

Corsair 2GB DDR2 Value Select PC4200 Dual Channel Kit = £85

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM = £81

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail = £135

Akasa Ultra Quiet 500W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel = £55

Look right to you ??

Seems pretty good, but i would agree with the move to Core 2 Duo. for around the same price as the X2 you could get the E6300/E4300. Of course you will need a different motherboard and maybe better ram.

Well I'm not entirely certain I can be bothered with overclocking anymore (I'm not very good at it :( )

As for budget, none in mind really.
I was just spec'ing a PC that in my opinion would remain rather decent for at least another year, and seeing what price it came out at.

£515 before delivery ain't too bad :)

Hi Stinka.

I think you went mad overboard on the GFX card there :)
I think that's a bit more powerful than my needs would require.

Also are Core 2 Duos really that much better than AMD 64 Dual Cores ?

The CPU I suggested is 2.6ghz and the one you suggest is 1.8ghz and there's not much in the price !!

Clock for clock Core 2 Duo's totally destroy AMD's. If you're going to be overclocking definitely get a Core 2 Duo as they go through the roof.

If not, then get an AMD as they're cheaper and have the simlar performance at stock.

Do I have to be to have F.I.R in my sig ? :p

Hmmmm.... it seems I will have to decide whether I am happy with stock performance or whether I might be tempted back into overclocking at somepoint in terms of my CPU (and all that it affects)

975 is older and more feature rich. It runs Crossfire out of the box and has more integrated devices. 965P is newer and is less feature rich. It overclocks better and is cheaper.

965 > 975 :)
