What is the general consensus on IT depts blocking access to sites like Facebook, Youtube, Ebay etc but then they (IT) are given access to do so? If you see what I mean?

They enforce the rule but breach it themselves? :p

our company used to block it all but ebay, so managers could check it lol... TBH i think its down to the IT Dept, blocking for all but themselves is wrong imo, it should be 1 rule for all but thats just me. They could lock it at all times except lunch 2 hour block...

I had a friend who was on a 30k a year cushy job - his job didnt really have much of an IT Dept but was called in one day to explain is internet usage. they said ur abusing the internet and we're going to sack u. My friend had the cheek to ask for proof...

Boss produced a large box full of print outs of his facebook usage lol. owned.

We block facebook myspace etc, but there is a single machine they can get to that has access. The IT staff (including me) do have access, but atleast we are aware of the dangers on these websites, hence why we are allowed to use them.

Facebook: Chat
Youtube: Videos (bandwidth)
Ebay: (selling/buying)

This is why they get blocked in our environment but not blocked for techs. The reason for this is testing purpouses ;)

I've only limited the bandwidth to Youtube here, they get 80kb/s, only got 10/10mb pipe :(

The office manager actually goes on Facebook to see who is on Facebook, genius!

What kind of sad employees have their boss as a 'friend' on facebook?

I'm in an I.T. dept. of ONE and i tend to lock down specific user accounts who browse a little bit more than job description allows.

As IT resource admins it is our job to enforce some level of productivity... Also we have a strict level of security, which social network sites can compromise. Loose lips and all that.

Myself, I have several hours between world ending disasters some days so a little light browsing helps relieve the monotony ;)

lol you think thats bad?
what about cornwall county council
blocked EVERYTHING up to and including the escapist (games) the onion (games) bing (chat)

We block all the usual sites (fb, myspace, ebay, youtube, gambling sites etc) but we have provided 10 machines in the break rooms which can access them.

I would argue that social networking sites, youtube etc aren't work related

I would argue that if you encourage these sort of sites they can be integral to a business, especially if you're in a multinational and have teams all over the world. IBM and JP Morgan both embrace the use of Facebook (within reason obviously).

Nothing is blocked for us at all, however my wench's work go completely over the top but in a bad way. She can't even look at craft websites at lunchtime but her mate can be looking at pictures of his own backside on facebook! Figure that one out!

A lot of it is the "god complex" as I work in I.T. I see it far too often :( As adults, my policy when I was admin for our ACL in my last work I let people view anything, but audited what they visited and the company made it clear that each person took responsibility for the times they used the net and the reason for doing so. Personally this is how I think it should be - we're adults, let us see it all and if you have to block anything, make sure it's just on the basis of protecting the network (known malware sites etc.)

We block facebook and all social networking sites for about 97% of our users, marketing and community staff have access to it. It's their main marketing tool apart from the press, I work for local government.. I have access to them as well but I have no need to go on them, would some times pay a visit during my lunch break.

facebook, youtube etc not blocked but other stuff is. IT dept has same browsing perms as everyone else.
