i ran the new benchmark for 3d mark the other night and afterwards had a look at open hardware monitor and it said my max cpu temp hit 128c........

im no expert but wouldnt my pc be on fire at that point or at least my cpu knackered, i immediatly ran cinebench and temps on hardware monitor said around 79c with all cores maxxed out on the multi core test.

im guessing a false positive, also a fairly new install of win 10 from when i built this comp, max thats reported tonight after a night of gaming is 77.1c

also it shows some of my ssd's and nvmes as generic ones, new comp teething issues? or is my version of hardware monitor borked lol

It is a false positive, your PC would have shut down if it had actually reached that temperature.
phew thats what i thought, thank you, i was crapping it and in my bios trying to find a shutdown temp setting lol :)

For the past few years, CPUs and GPUs will thermal throttle, but not exceed their maximum temperature.
As you mentioned 3d Mark, under stats, it will show the temperature for CPU and GPU, as well as clock speed.
For monitoring I’m using HWInfo for ages now. Seems to be precise.

are you still on the original bios, before the updated bioses that prevented 78003ds from melting?
its this board https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B650-AORUS-ELITE-AX-V2#kf
