hey guys had a feeling for a couple of weeks my PSU was on it's way out when my old rig below in my sig failed to boot at 3.5 GHz but booted fine at stock, and as i was upgrading i didn't really think much about it but had that feeling it was the psu, anyway decided to upgrade the gpu's first and was looking @ 2 GTX570/80's and before i bought anything i checked the PSU calculator (here) and added a little age (30% due to age and 24/7 usage) to my PSU as recommended and it come back with
Minimum PSU Wattage: 828W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 878W

now my psu is the one below (corsair 850w) so should be-able to manage this without too much trouble but no.... so gave up on the idea of upgrading the cards and instead decided to upgrade the board and cpu to an MSI z77a GD65, ivybridge i5 3570k and 8Gb DDR3 due to lower power needs of the board and cpu before doing so i checked PSU calc using a worse case scenario of 5GHz needing 1.5v (max volts iirc) and it come back with
Minimum PSU Wattage: 772W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 822W

so again should be easy for my 850 W corsair...... anyway got my new system up and running and been putting it through it's paces and got it upto 3.8GHz (auto in bios ) and been trying to squeeze a little more from my gpu's (GTX460) stock they run @ 811MHz core, 1622MHz shader and 1950MHZ memory so with W's in hand clocked the cards to a known stable 875MHz core, 1750MHz shader and 2000MHz mem so nothing crazy and well it didn't like it checking the PSU calc again using the GTX470 as a guide to power usage it come's back with 822 W recommended again well within the spec of my PSU......

question is am i blaming all this on my poor PSU for nothing or is it on it's way out and if it is what sort of turn around can i be expecting from corsair, it was bought on 10 Jun, 09 so just over 3 years and it comes with 5 years so is still under warranty

Could indeed be a faulty psu, i use an HX850w corsair here, even with very power hungry gtx 470's in sli, overclocked too. And an i7 920 @4ghz, power draw at the wall was 630w, this cpu uses a bit more power than the current intel offerings.

according to the PSU calc my ivy bridge even going insane and inputting 5GHz overclock and 1.5 volts "Overclocked CPU Wattage = 163W" a 3.5GHz overclock on my old phenom II @1.435V uses 216W

so do you think i should RMA my PSU? i think i'll need to buy a new one before i do and while i'm at it may as well upgrade it for the future thinking 1kw+ as i plan to run high-end sli (GTX580/670) when funds allow and i'll be overclocking my i5 to i hope around 4.5-4.8GHz

i should add all temps are well within safe limits with the hottest gpu getting to around 60'c and the hottest core (@3.8) 51'c temps were also about the same with my old rig
