I think I need older memory - advice please.

I've built a system for my step daughter, the majority of main parts being something like 12 months old. The mobo is an ASRock K7S41GX and is fitted with 192mb of RAM. It's running WinXP Home so I need a bit more RAM.

The manual says it supports PC2700 (DDR333) / PC2100 (DDR266) / Max 2gb.

She doesn't need anywhere near the top of the range fastest stuff as all she does is Bebo, YouTube and MSN.

It seems OcUK don't do my memory any more. So...can I fit 256mb or 512mb and expect it to work without difficulties? Will it just run at a lower speed?

Yes it will work it will just run at the same speed as the slowest RAM in your system.

Also, is it still necessary to match memory in terms of size? Ie: Could I run a 256/512mb module alongside the existing 192mb or not?

192 isnt an easy configuration to get

it is like 256 with a 64k shared memory for on board grpahics card

which means it will (hopefully) be one stick of 256 )if it is, I woudl advise replacing the graphics card, you can some decent cards quite cheap now)

or it could be 128 + 64, if that is the case, whip out the 64 and replace it with a 256 or a 512, in fact for that matter whip them both out and replace them with 256s.

If your motherboard manual says it supports upto 2 gig, it probably has 4 memmory slots, each capable of taking a 512.

you can mix the sizes with out any problems, try and not mix speeds if you can (they will usualy just run at the slowest, but every level of mismatch adds an extra level of possible conflict to find if things don't quite work properly)

yes it will work theoritically but like in any case, same memory with same specification is the best case scenario, start mixing different branded memory with different size and speed then you increase the risk of getting conflict / incompatibility.
