I Think I put too much Thermal Paste?

How much paste exactly? I take it it was only a small tube or you're going to have a hell of a mess.

If it is too much I'd start again any buy some more paste and TIM remover, then very carefully remove the heatsink and chip and remove all paste and clean the CPU and heatsink. Make sure the paste hasn't spread out beyond the chip into the socket and surrounding area or you could be in for a mare.

All you need is a tiny rice grain size blob of paste on the cpu. Then let the pressure of your cooler spread it out.

If this is the tube size then its too much to use it all. Looks like about 3 - 3.5g worth in that.

I'd definitely start again. As for your temps, they seem remarkably good considering too much paste will insulate the heat not dissipate it, but I wouldn't risk leaving it as it is.

It should be OK. Squeeze a bit out and disregard, then check that the next squeeze isn't dried or separated. If it is then chuck it.

If it's some cheap generic gunk then you might want to buy some better performing stuff anyway.

And good luck :)

How can you have accidently applied to much? did you jump on the tube? I put a pea sized amount on and used the spreader to cover the clip, just waiting on delivery of my H100 so I can do it all over again lol

He got it wrong. Why are you laughing at him? He's here for help. Do you NEVER do anything stupid?

At the OP - IT's probably a real mess under that cooler. There may be thermal compound EVERYWHERE. I would not remove the CPU from the socket as if you get thermal grease in there you could really wreck it. Leave the CPU locked in place and wipe off all the visible thermal grease.

Be careful with the cleaner if you use it. Moisten a cloth with a small amount of cleaner and use the cloth on the CPU surface.

Then by all means apply a small blob of thermal grease to the cpu surface and reseat the CPU cooler.

Of course not, I'm infallible :)

I just don't know how it's possible to mess up, but then I suppose thats why we walk into glass doors and stub our toes on door frames lol.

Sorry if I came on a bit heavy hammer. I've long wondered why, if only need a tiny amount of thermal grease, they supply about 50 times as much as you need? It seems odd to me anyway.

I always used to spread the thermal compound over the chip but putting a pea size blob in the middle and having the pressure of the heatsink spread it was easier and actually better.

Putting too much on will just mean it squeezes out the side of the heatsink which will only be a problem if you're using Artic Silver as it's conductive.

Thermal compound is used to fill the minute gaps between the heatsink and cpu where they're not machine completely flat and would other wise be filled with air. Thermal compound fills these gaps and increases the heat transfer between the chip and heatsink. This is why you see people on here lap (sand flat with wet and dry) their cpu and heatsink so they sit much more flush and require less thermal compound to fill in these gaps. Doing this normally sees a couple of degrees drop in cpu temperature.

very easily. in the manual for my zalman CNPS9900MAX it said to use the whole tube of thermal paste, so it probably said the same with the gelid. i can imagine most people would believe the instruction manual from the company that made the product over a computer forum.

luckily i had been on this forum before so i decided to use a generous pea sized amount, thinking that i needed more than normal because this paste was different in some way. this ended up being ~2/3 of the syringe, and still made a big mess, which which took about 20 cotton buds to clear up completely
