I think i'm getting "into" movie soundtracks, help!

Heh well not quite "help" as it's perfectly healthy, but I seem to be developing a real fondness for movie sountracks, specifically the classical orchestral styles. It started with a love of the AWESOME EPICNESS that is the Last of the Mohicans... if you haven't seen this film then please stop reading this and go and watch it, and then get the soundtrack.

Anyway, i've now managed to get hold of soundtracks for the following films:

• Gladiator
• Dances with Wolves
• LOTR Trilogy
• Braveheart
• Star Wars Original Trilogy
• Indiana Jones Trilogy
• Shawshank Redemption

The music from these is simply absolutely stunning... I never considered myself a lover of 'classical' or orchestral styles, but these albums carry you on swirling eddies of convoluted sound that i've never really experienced before, and I find that I can envision the films as I hear it and recognise different parts. I think I may start reading again and put this sort of music on in the background. I have LOTR on now and it's completely mind-blowing, I just wish to high heaven I had my Pio/Quad soundsystem over here in Switzerland... but even so it still sounds great out of my PC speakers. I can really imagine losing hours just lost in my own little world.

Anyone else here appreciate what i'm talking about, and reccommend any others of this style I might like?

EDIT - zomg i'm listening to LOTR Two Towers - Evenstar. Makes me wants to go woo/ravage an elf maiden or something.

If you like that sort of thing I imagine you'd love the musical version of War of the Worlds.

Just listened to the Stargate soundtrack... it's epic in that grand biblical sort of sense that has you gazing off into the distance fantasizing.

Some good suggestions too chaps, please just bear in mind that it's quite specifically the classical orchestral and traditional pipe/orchestra accompaniment stuff that i'm really looking for. I do love a lot of more modern tuff like the American Beauty soundtrack but it doesn't have quite the same tingle on my brain.

I always thought the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack by Danny Elfman was amazing.

Look for anything by X-Ray Dog. Not sure who or what it is, but my cousin gave me a CD with a load of music on it just like you are describing, some of it is AWESOME!

I love this kind of music.

Wow I just cannot stop listening to the LOTR soundtracks... especially The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. I think it may be some of the most moving set of scores I have ever heard in my life, with particular favourites being:

This really gives you the impression of Hobbits capering around fields while drinking cider... such a light-hearted and beautiful melody, really kicking in at 00:30 and 1:34.

An evocative, stirring and haunting piece...really coming alive at 2:20 and invoking the same epic feel that the film scene gave you,

A similar style to the above obviously, but a slow-burning development that really evokes images of the King awakening from his spell-induced haze, and then the wrath that ensued.

There are loads more, but those are ones I keep finding myself hitting "repeat on". It's like they are almost as powerful as the films in their own right, completely enthralling. Would I have liked them as much if they weren't LOTR... who knows... but i'm glad I found 'em anyway.

My ambition is now to see these played live in concert. Somehow.

EDIT - Seems that there is a concert in Luzerne, Switzerland at the end of this month... could be a definite win as that's only a stones throw from Zurich. Hmm...

Bit of a thread revival but I am now making an excellent movie soundtrack playlist based on my favourite tracks from many movies and with the help of Youtube playlists which have provided some great inspiration. The aim is to have the songs played thematically with songs from the same album played together and not separated (you can always play it randomly anyway) to provide consistency and prolong the immersion from your favourite tracks.
