so here goes the tale. Somebody at work bought a 2nd hand sky router from ebay. Not realising that the sky router isnt just any ADSL router, it will only work with sky.. unless you flash it

anyway, she starts making enquiries and we tell her, it will only work with skybroad band unless you flash it. She enquires what flashing it entailes, and how to do it etc.. so i e-mail her the link on the skyuser website

anyway, she takes one look, decides its too much for her, and asks if id do it. me being a pillock volunteered. Dead easy i say, ive flashed routers before, piece of cake

so i take the router home, duly follow the instructions, put the netgear router into reset mode (with the alternating flicking lights) and start the flashing procedure. I hit the erase EPROM button, and the software causes my machine to core dump. BSOD then restart.

I prey for the best, and start the flashing procedure again, but this time, the flashing tool doesnt pick the device up. Presumably because ive bricked my work mates router :(

is there any hope for me ? or have i got a long story to tell on monday ..

I did the same thing a few weeks ago, not realising the program doesn't work with vista. :(
I've looked around everywhere for a fix and was told there was nothing to do except get a new router.

yeah i use vista unfortunately

they should really have a warning on the website telling you that using this programme on vista bricks your router

ive tryed the flashing programme again, without the router connected, and it still core dumps my system. Vista seriously does not like the netgear flashing utility

*looks up netgear customer service e-mail*

daft thing is, thats exactly how i was flashing the router. And the router still has the flashing alternate lights like its expecting a flash to come in

ive done some more searching, and i think i may be a victim of an unfortunate co-incidence. Apparently some network cards just dont work with the netgear flashing utility. So i think my XP laptop doesnt like it, and allthough vista could detec it and now cant, it looks like this may just be netgears flashing utlity not liking vista

going to try it on another XP machine and see how i get on
