I built my very first computer in 2016. I'm still using the same parts. However I recently figured I think it's time for an upgrade and new monitor for better visuals would be the right way forward.

What monitor should I be looking at?

What is your current monitor?

What do you want to focus on more, resolution or refresh rate or maybe colour accuracy? We'll need to know what you do with your pc before advice can be given :)

Sorry I should have put that in my post. Here's the problem I have and I'm very confused. When I build my pc I was a fps competitive gamer so having a constant 144 fps to match my 144hz monitor was just too good at the time. However now I play games more casual such as world of warcraft. I want better visuals and better colours but how will my 980ti be able to reach fps at 144hz on a 1440p monitor. i hope i don't sound too confusing but what difference will i see in playing on a 144hz 1080p monitor for all these years to a new 1440p monitor. can i even reach 144hz on a 1440p monitor with my current setup?

i think the problem i have right now is how i have been spoiled with good fps to match my monitors 144hz all these years. i don't know if i could even get used to a possible 60hz monitor on 1440p
 
as long as you can hit a number over 60 consistently it will look good its all about staying the same and having no fps dips

Have a similar quandary to you thinking about moving up to 1440p from a 144hz 1080p

These parts need to be upgraded, too.

You don't provide the most important information - what is your current framerate in the games that you run?
If you can't even hit 60 FPS, then it doesn't make sense to again target 144 or 240 Hz screens.

From my understanding of the OP posts in here he wants a 1440p monitor not a 4k one

He did say 1440p four times in post number 3 :p

Wait what? I need to fully upgrade my PC just to upgrade my monitor? I thought a 980ti was overkill for my current monitor but i've used it for 6 years. i really need to upgrade?

i can easily achieve a solid 144+ fps in most games which makes it smooth for my 144hz.
 
A 980Ti is still a decent card for 1080p. The problem is that it falls down very quickly as soon as you move up a resolution to 1440p (to speak nothing of ultrawide or 4K). If you upgrade monitors you're essentially going to need a new video card. And lucky for you this is probably the worst time in the history of dedicated gpus to be in the market for a new video card. Congrats!

Your best bet is to hold off on the monitor until you can upgrade your video card. What video card you (try to) purchase should ultimately depend on what monitor resolution you want.
 
That 2GB graphics card would be definitely serious obstacle at 2560x1440 in any kind more modern games.

You want better visuals, right? If so, the monitor that I specced for you is a very high quality - rich colours one and you will be happy with it - you won't want to return to that old 1080p TN panel ;)

It's 6 GB, that is false reading out there.
 
If you have been using a 144Hz monitor for years than I completely agree with your concerns here, 60Hz is mind numbingly bad. My reaction to a 60Hz monitor now is OMG I can't deal with this! I would certainly aim for at least 90Hz. Coming all the way down to 60Hz would be a disaster! I would certainly not get a 4K monitor, they are just too hard to drive. You can calculate to some degree what the impact will be. If you currently have a 1080P monitor, 2 million pixels, compared to a 1440P monitor which has 3.7 million. So roughly speaking, worst case, your graphics card will run at about half the FPS if you get a 1440P monitor ( well, a little more, say about x0.6 ). So if you let your GPU flat out in games, get the number of frames it can achieve, then roughly half it. As long as you are 80-90 fps then you are good. Note that you can't benefit from Freesync or GSync with that graphics card. You need at least a series 10 GPU for that.
