For an upgrade

my machine is starting to age now, although it does everything i need perfectly adaquate i dont want to slip too far behind.

This is what i have..

Asus M3A32-MVP
Phenom 9950 BE
4 Gig of Corsair XMS2 TwinX
ATI 4850

i tend to game a fair bit EvE Online being my main game and it plays that fine

i ran thru crysis 2 the other day and it played fine no jerks etc, not sure what resolution i was at i just left it as it was

My desktop resolution is 1440x900 on a LG Flatron W1942S 19" WS

my budget is pretty tight as ive just been made redundant but ill be buying bits as i go along

my thoughts was to buy a hex core AMD of some kind as it will fit in this board and work, then maybe change the board when i can, ram etc as i need it will be keeping the same case which is an antec 900 and if i can keep the same PSU which is a corsair 600W one

i dont want a monstor system as it would pretty much be wasted on EvE i just need to get a bit more up to date

any help/advice would be appreciated

Thats the CPU support list, so as you say, it can take everything, but for gaming a quad core cpu is better.

But then comparing a Phenom 9950 to a PhenomII 955BE - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/21?vs=88 - doesnt look worth it.

vs a 1055T hex CPU - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/21?vs=147

A GPU upgrade maybe a better way to go,

a monitor upgrate is not viable means a whole desk change which im not about to do my desk cost enough,

would a hex core really make that much of a difference?
a gpu upgrade is something ive been looking at but not sure which way to go,
last time i jumped from Nvidia to ATI and i loved the improved colour it just looked so much better, went from a 8800GT to this 4850 and i cant see me going back to Nvidia

which card would you lot reccomend? i dont want a 6 million quid card or owt like that just something of a modern equivalent really,
that 5850 looks nice the numbers would say its just the 5 series of my card but im not nieve enough to think its that simple

is there a 6 series version is it worth it?

is the DDR2 to DDR3 jumps something noticable?

thanks in advance

as from the Anandtech charts above, it doesnt seem worth the £££

That 5850 is a steal for that price, you are jobless after all, it offers DX11 and other benefits compared to the 4850

the more expensive 6850 is a similar speed to the 5850, maybe a bit faster - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/295?vs=291

is the DDR2 to DDR3 jumps something noticable?
No its not worth it

thanks in advance

sorry to bump this open again but the gpu im currently using i eventually plan to put in my second machine and i just noticed after a few days of slighly laggy gaming that the fan on the card is not spinning, while i plan to buy a new card ive had to wait due to putting a new power supply in instead, the card is a power color HD4850 and it has a arctic cooling L2 on it, i have no idea where to look but i need either a new fan for this or a completly different HS/F combination i have no idea if it is a reference board or not so im calling on your help again ocuk people

the cooler looks like this one
