Well, after a long topic on the Ubuntu forum (112 pages) & emailing someone, I may have the pron. source my USB wireless dongle. So what brand would work ok as a replacement??

Even though you're in the states doesn't mean you can't get a D-Link DWA-140 or equiv :p

But generally, D-Link stuff works well with Linux. No end of troubles with my VIA USB wireless. But meh, I have GbE so I don't care ;)

I am in the US. :)

Google seems to imply there are at least 165 US retailers selling the DWA-140, so I'm not sure that's a problem.

If you're interested in a PCI card instead then I can confirm the Edimax EW-7727IN works in 10.04.

For both of those adapters just make sure that if you're using WPA you set the version to specify WPA or WPA2, not WPA+WPA2. It took me ages to realise that was causing my connectivity problems rather than some inherent Ubuntu incompatibility.

Hmmm, I have it on WPA+WPA2 now, maybe I should change it & see if the freezes stop. I can't there are no options with just WPA or WPA2.

Maybe try turning of encryption completely for a while, but I doubt that's the problem. If you can connect to the wireless then I don't think using the mixed encryption setting is an issue. When my router was set to that neither of my adapters would connect at all. An older 3Com was fine though.
