I think we should have a retro gaming section on OCUK

1) Trawling through the retro console thread, I've seen many incredible purchases and finds, yet over time most of them get lost in a sea of multiple discussions. With over 100 pages so far, I believe it would be oh so awesome to have our own retro gaming section on ocuk. This is also beneficial for people looking back through their own thread for that specific haul/purchase/nostalgic moment ;)

2) Another thing that slightly bothers me, you cannot sell any retro consoles and computers correctly in the for sale section as people are generally not expecting any to be in there. So how about allowing people to sell retro computers and consoles too in this new section?

Nope I dont see the need - indeed for the fact discussion organically wrapped itself into a singular thread probably confirms that. If it did I cant it just being a load of short threads about an individual purchase and identical truncated discussion...

Regards your second point - the MM is run better than the whole of the rest of the forum put together, why move sales outside of that?

I didn't expect 2) to go ahead really, but it would've been nice so put the idea forward.

And in regards to 1) it's cleaner and allows deeper discussions for each individual retro based thread. For example 2 pages talking about the Amiga or the Amstrad, is better than one thread talking about everything with a mish mash of discussions

Thats fine but whats stopping that happening now? Its not like this sub-forum is particularly busy with new threads created left, right and centre - having more retro gaming threads wouldnt be a negative thing at all...

EDIT: To illustrate the first page of threads covers 3 days worth of 'bumps'

It's not really a mish mash though is it? The thread isn't active enough that it has several conversations crossing over one another at once. Whenever I go in there its usually person X has bought something and a few people will comment on it, the thread will go to sleep for a while until someone else buys something, and repeat.

Could we experiment with thread within the current forum?

So "The Mega Drive Thread" or "All things SNES and Super Famicom" or "The overpriced NEO-GEO thread"

Only "issue" would be having Amiga or Atari ST or non-console vintage stuff in here.

See how popular they are first?

If there's room for a board game sub forum then surely there's enough interest in retro games and consoles.

The difference being that we already have two "computer/console" gaming forums whereas we had no provision for board gaming previously.

The idea has been raised as above. I personally do not see the need.

Sales of retro console/games will absolutely need to stay in the MM however. I highly doubt that will change.

Agreed! Retro gaming in fact dominates board games and that sub forum only has what 8 pages?

Personally I think we should give it a trial run, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work! No harm in trying?

But then those 8 pages of threads have nowhere else to go. We already have a console and PC gaming forums where retro games can be discussed. This is not me saying that there shouldn't be a retro section, merely saying why it's not really comparable.

I really don't feel that it's necessary, older consoles and games can have threads created for them in the Console Games & Hardware sub forum, the fact that nobody has really bothered making a thread for retro Sega/Nintendo consoles already sort of points to the fact that an entire sub forum simply doesn't have the demand required to keep it active.

The retro console and games thread is bumped daily-ish but like I said it's mainly the same couple of people showing their recent purchases and then the same handful of people commenting on those purchases. It's not as if the conversations in there are criss-crossing over one another and things are getting lost because of it, it's not that busy in there.

As it stands there isn't anything stopping someone opening a Mega Drive thread if they wanted, or a SNES thread, or any other kind of retro console thread.

Totally agree with OP. The forum does not cater for anything retro computer/console related other than the retro thread, which is a shame as I have to go elsewhere for that community. I've asked about retro threads on here before and it got poo poo'd.

Would it not be easier to just have a separate sub forum called Retro Gaming. Anything retro is in that forum. Simples.

Its bad enough we cant use the word 'emulator' around here and Id guess anything Raspberry Pi related is a no no too as pretty much everyone uses a Raspberry Pi to do one thing...play retro games.

IMO there is no retro sub because amongst the threads about people that own retro games and hardware would be the emulator and roms threads that apparently are the root of all evil despite Atari not giving a monkeys if you emulate one of their 2600 games from 1979.

Rant over.
> Heads back to forum where 'retro' is allowed.

It would be nice to buy Neo Geo carts etc. outside of eBay but in a safe area. If a new section is created, the mods should checkout neo-geo.com forums to get a flavour of the retro scene.

I think a retro sub forum would be awesome. Could attract new people to the forum, never a bad thing for business.

It's weird how the largest gaming forum (NeoGAF) allows talk of emulators and roms and yet this place doesn't.

I think that needs a re-think, obviously talk of pirating these things and where to get them shouldn't be allowed but talk about using them should be.

On topic though I really don't see the point unless you are going to allow the talk of the stuff I mentioned above, a whole forum for a small sub community seems overkill.

No, but it's the major gaming forum on the Internet.

I personally still get the over protective nature of this forum in regards to roms and emulation when in the movie forum it's just as obvious when people have pirated films.
