I thought LCD should be better for my eyes?

I recently got the Belinea 102035W, pretty great screen. Its the first time Ive spent a considerable amount of money on a monitor. I was using a 17" CRT for years before this. Anyway, over the past few days Ive noticed Ive started to get dull headaches and an aching pain in my eyes while using the monitor. Shouldn't it actually be better for my eyes than my old flickery CRT? At work I use smaller TFT monitors, dont get anything like this. The monitor appears to be in great shape, no dead pixels, nice sharp display. Whats the deal?

You may have an adjustment phase...initially TFTs seemed very bright and lurid to me (in an almost imposing on the eye manner), but it soon becomes normal.

Get your eyes checked - you will never regret that.

Try reducing the brightness on the screen. The new dell screen I just got had the brightness level set to an eyesearingly high level.

i'd certainly recommend getting the screen set up with a comfortable brightness and contrast level, factory settings for brightness are normally very high!

This is very true. They usualkly have the brightness way up becasue on retailer's demonstration shelves the screens look brighter and seem to give more brilliant color. This sells monitors. It's just like the way they used to (and probably still do) market TVs. They boost the blue in the picture in the factory setting so that it looks brighter.

Thanks for the help guys, I did actually drop the brightness before I made this topic, but not enough it seems. So at night I now drop the brightness to 0! (Unless im working on something), in the daytime its not so bad. Pretty much does the trick it seems, kinda reminds me a bit of my dull old CRT, but its better than pain.

I might just get my eyes checked too.

You sure your still doing the same kinda things?

Simple thing (not meant as Medical advice) but are you still drinking enough? If I don't drink enough during the day I get dull headaches and would normally chalk it up to staring at the screen.

Just something worth checking :)

Very true. To the OP, give it some time.
I was a CRT diehard and changed to TFT's sometime in late 2004 iirc. My first week resulted in my eyes watering a lot and I had eye strain. A week later I was fine and my eyes had adjusted to the difference between the two screens.

I went from CRT to TFT about 4-5 years ago and had my CRT as a "secondary" monitor, I soon turned it off after 6 hours and unplugged it without any problems viewing my TFT!

LOL
I've drunk enough tonight, now i've got a headache coming on !!

Just want to echo what's been said above, turn the brightness down until you find a comfortable level. You shouldn't use a 200+ cd/m2 screen on full brightness sat at a normal PC viewing distance as it will hurt your eyes after a while. I know it looks flat and dull with the brightness turned down but your eyes just don't like staring at a big bright light at close quarters for hours on end.

You'll probably find you can use a higher brightness in gaming than when doing normal windows stuff/web browsing. It's handy if your screen has easily accessible brightness presets.

I have found a similar thing. I've been using 21" CRT's at home for the last few years. This summer I'm doing a work placement and am using a TFT and it make my eyes ache, whereas i've never had any problems looking at CRT's (as long as they are at 100Hz)

Yes, the factory default brightness can be very high, most tfts I've seen have this. Turn it down, its the first thing I did with mine :).....failing that helping you, then maybe you need to get your eyes checked out anyway, its always wise if you're unsure. Coming from crts I found it a problem initially but as said, if you adjust things accordingly, tfts can be very easy on the eyes.

It seems to be getting a little better, I whacked the brightness down to a pretty comfortable level. Seems to be only at night now, when lighting is poor that I get any discomfort.

Im actually glad you mentioned, I wasn't keeping tabs but I might not be drinking as much as I used to for some reason. Taking in enough fluid now, im not sure if its me getting used to the screen or simply not be dehydrated that's making things that little bit easier.
