I have recently bought a I pod touch. Last week I bought an album off itunes directly with my ipod. Now I have my ipod on manual sync and I am having trouble getting my music off my ipod onto my pc.

That's because you can't get music back of an iPod onto a PC because of copyright issues. To get them of an iPod, you need to use a 3rd party app to do it.

Try using Ephpod.

I've also tried this with the iTunes Wifi store by buying an iTunes Plus song. I was slightly concerned when I had to authorise my PC iTunes in order to transfer the purchase. I thought you didn't need to do such things with DRM-free music. How can I test if my song is DRM-free? Does playing it in anything other than iTunes mean it is DRM-free?

Two ways;

Select your files and "Get Info".. That'll show you if they're "Protected" or not.

Second, you can see the file extension.. If it has .m4p it has DRM, otherwise it will be .m4a :)

I think this might be more to do with identifying the iPod itself rather than the song.
