hi all i am currently with virgin media 60 meg and i want to change to bt broadband reason i want to change is becuse i have to reboot the modem a lot it gose down a lot and virgin are not willing to work with me they want me to install a super hub when i know there is a big security fall in there hub now i have just done a cheak on bt and they can only offer me aspeed quoted. Between 1.0Mb and 3.5Mb
(Estimated speed: 2.0Mb)
my question is will this connetion be rubbish for gaming infinty is only in my area in december i just cant be bothered with virgin no more sorry about my spelling thanks to any replys you give me :)

What is the 'big' security flaw in the Super Hub? Going from a 60MB connection to a 3.5MB (estimated 2MB) Do you really need to ask if its suitable for gaming? :D

Call up Virgin and tell them the issues. granted you need to be persistant but they will sorted it! If it were me I wouldnt leave to goto a 2MB connection!

there is a issue with the built in firewall on the super hub some sites dont load up and i did a shields up test and it failed on the common ports test twice now with my own hub and modem sites load up corrently and i dont fail on the shields up test

There is a problem with the built-in firewall of the Virgin Media Super-Hub which causes websites not to load because it is detecting their responses as a "SYN Flood" (Denial-of-Service attack) i got that from youtube

!

not sure what you are getting at.. 2mb should be fine for games as long as you are not fighting with anyone else for bandwidth and as long as the latency is ok...

2mb BB + 10ms latency = great

60mb BB + 100ms latency = rubbish...

if all else fails (as in speaking to virgin and getting the issue fixed)

1) turn the router into a moden and try a cable router (may help but unlikjely)
2) ask them to reduce the line speed to 20mb, if that does not help put on the only style cable modem thing (the small black / blue one not the large old silver ones)
3) confirm you cannot get BT infinity where you live

I upgraded from 10 to 20mb after about a week the speed dropped to 8mb then 5 then it was on and off for 3 months...then I had it put back to 10mb and reinstalled the cable modem / my original router... been ok since other people on my road have loads of issues with 50mb service

Have you called Virgin? demand a line check and an engineer to vist. you could always use the SH in modem mode (if not already) that would resolve your concerns over the Firewall.

I would consider the 2mb connection as a last resort, especially if your aiming to do mostly gaming!

2Mb/s is absolutely fine for gaming. Gaming doesn't need a lot of bandwidth. It needs low latency and low jitter.

Buy a new wireless router such as the RT-N56U or RT-N66U and put the superhub in "modem only" mode.

This way the new router handles the firewall, and you purely use their superhub as a means to connect to the cable.

thought he said he alreayd had a router that is magic on the shileds up test?
so just use the superhub as a modem, and his own router, jobs done
excluded the old modem which needs reset, and gets him the full 60.
Going from 60 down to 2, is something I could not contemplate.

Download max payne 3 from steam in approx 34 hours at full speed, and go over your monthly quota at the same time. Ouch.
Stick with virgin, superhub in modem only mode until dec, then look at your infinity options.

I turned off my superhub firewall and did a shields up test and it passed everything with my computer connected to the hub and no firewall, only my software on my PC

EDIT: It also passes with the firewall activated

Well the kid believes something else, so he can just turn it off and modem mode it only if he wants.
I haven't ran shields up in years.
I doubt I or the OP will experience many direct DDOS attacks directed against us personally.

I don't throw cats in bins ;)
