I haven't played an RPG in years. I'm interested at having a go at one now.
I'm after one that has plenty of depth of story and good character development, fairly easy to get into.
I'd value decent gamepley over snazzy graphics.
What would you recommend people?

I've considered Oblivion, I'm very tempted but I've also read a lot of negative reviews which have put me off a bit.
The consensus seems to be you need to do install a fair few mods to get the best out of it.

As well as Oblivion the others that I've been considering are Oblivion's predecessor Morrowind and the Baldur's Gate series.

*Uses lockpicks +1 to open thread again :D *

If you haven't played the Baldurs Gate series then please do so at the earliest opportunity! The graphics are shall we say, a bit old skool, but the sequel (BG2) will always remain one of my top three games.

Recently I've been thinking about hunting 'the bay' for a cheap copy of Baldur's Gate 1. It was the first RPG I completed, and it would be nice to revisit it again after all these years.

*Wipes away the fanboy drool*

If it's story your after then Planescape Torment is apparently very good too, but I've never played it myself. KOTOR is also very clever as well. ;)

Another vote for Baldur's Gate 2. Loved it and have replayed 2 or 3 times.

Didn't like Torment at all, despite it getting rave reviews.

I might have a copy of BG1 knocking around somewhere you can have, I'll have a hunt at home.

NWN 1+2
KOTR 1+2
Oblivion (not my personal favourite because even though I'd advancing it never feels like you're getting anywhere)
Baldurs gate 1+2 if you don't mind an older game.

KOTOR 1 for sure - really well coded, brilliant story and great graphics.

KOTOR 2 - I liked it because I love star wars, but it is still better than average - not as good as KOTOR 1 IMHO.

Vampire: Redemption - Good graphics, a few bugs, a few good fan patches which have kept it playable. Lots of fun.

Oblivion - Only just started playing this, but it feels like something quite special...

Dungeon Master with an Amiga emulator anyone? ;)

It really depends. I love RPG's, but i have BG! It's totally different to Oblivion in the way that the camera angles and evrything are different. I also cant believe there arent more votes for Oblivion. It has to be the best RPG of all time, surely??

I really enjoyed(and recommend) the PC version of Fable. It was quite short , but was definately one of the better RPG's I've played .

if you can find it play Planescape:torment out of all the Baldurs gate style games out there this is the clear leader, when you start out you have absolutely NO idea what is happening around you, most of the characters speak in slang which you barely understand and the game is almost entirely driven by your characters development not its level (although there are some bits that kinda require higher levels its not that hard to go up.

best RPG I've ever played tbh.

if you still have a playstation lying around then:
Alundra
Breath of fire
suikoden
final fantasy (all are good but 7 is the best!)
grandia 1 and 2
i remember a few dragon based titles but dont recall their exact names
