Hey,

been having a look at a few mp3/mp4 players.

ipod touch - doesn't support divx. Even is "jailbreaked" i cannot find a divx 3rd party app.

iRiver Clix 2 - video support seems rubbish.

Creative Zen - divx yes - but it doesn't auto scale down - so you need to re-encode the whole clip to 320x240.

Anyone got any ideas? Looking for something that costs about £150.

Thanks

I want an answer to this too.
Basically a DIVX/XVID that I've acquired that can be put straight onto a player without encoding again.
I think Archos might be able to do it.

I watch normal Xvid/Divx/WMV on my ZV:M without any change to them (Full normal PAL/NTSC RES) so long as audio is not AC3.

Plays at the screens RES and plays at Full PAL or NTSC RES when outputed to my TV.

i have the archos 504, sweet piece of kit, 80gb drive widescreen

only downside is that you need to purchase certain codecs, not sure what the newer models are like for codecs etc. only reason i got the 504 was because of the drive size, wifi etc... i couldnt care less about, who needs wifi on a plane or in a caravan

Am still shocked and amazed no ones ever released a "3rd party" tool to give Divxs/Flac support to the Ipods/Iphones to make it the ultimate and best player on the market.

Perhaps its just not powerful enough....

;)

So what DO they play? Say you record an xvid of a TV programme, do you have to convert it to watch it on the iPod/iPhone? Does it come with conversion software?

Got a 605 and it's great for music & video. I don't use the wifi/web browser much but it's very ..ah...usable. Has a little problem with a couple of the more advanced encoding settings for video I think (won't play subs from a couple of groups, but a < 10s re-encode fixes that). Max resolution for video is also 720x480 / 720x576 (DVD).

As mentioned, Archos love to make you pay extra for plug-ins too. Web browser, H.264 support, MPEG2/.vob support...
The browser is 30 Euro, others are 20.

You also have to buy some form of Archos dock in order to get a wall charger. The player only comes with a USB cable which takes forever to charge. The battery isn't removable without modding the player either.

It's a great bit of kit, but let down somewhat by Archos making a lot of unhelpful design choices.

No, you have to either buy QuickTime pro and use its (very slow) built-in H.264 encoder or use a third-party tool. Apple seem to think that people only use them for stuff they're going to buy off the iTunes store.

Right. Well I dont have a huge problem re-encoding, I'd just like to know what I'd have to re-encode to. H.264 is not too bad. How would it cope with wmv?

When I read your reply I had half a fit against Apple but after a short browse and testing I have no real problem with this.

VLC Player is a great little player I have used for years. What I didnt know is it also re-encodes video. One of the options is H.264, and one of the encapsulations is mov, which I assume is the right one for iPods. I just tested it with a 1 minute divx and it encoded it without glitches in under a minute (on my slow laptop). The resulting video goes from 10mb to 2.93mb, but looks pretty much like the original, especially on a small screen like the iPod Touch is.

I chose 128kbps MP3 for the output sound. Does anyone know whether the iPod Touch also requires a particular sound format too?

Cowon A3 will play most audio/video files without transcoding, uses a drag and drop interface in windows just like a portable hard drive. Its a bit pricier than the Archos 605 though.

If you're on a budget you could look at the Mobiblu T30. Picked mine up for about £70, which isn't bad for a 3" widescreen that'll do xvid and divx. Only drawback is no software bundle, 4gb internal memory and it's only compatible with SD cards, not SDHC.

Hi,
I am considering this player. Is the battery life any good? Is it USB only charging? cheapest I have seen it is £95 delivered.
