I want my DTS speakers to work: which sound card with digital output to get?

Hey,

Ages ago, I bought a set of speakers with a DTS (decoding?) box thing. However, I have never heard the DTS or even Dolby Sound from them as my sound card doesn't have a digital output. It is an old SB Audigy card with an output to a Creative Digital I/O Module (http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=16&product=1780) which is apparently sold seperately, but I never found a seller anywhere.

So my question is, what is the cheapest and easiest way to get the required digital output (that I think) I need to get the DTS sound going? Do I have to get one of the HDA cards I see OcUK selling or are there cheaper/alternative cards I can get?

shame creatives own uk store doesnt sell it.

isn't there a product suggestion webnote or something for ocuk?
 
hmm.. what speakers did u get?? Logitech Z5500??

i think the Creative Audigy has a SPDIF out..... so u'll need an optical cable to connect it to the SPDIF-in to ** decoder
 
the HDA X-Plosion has a DTS encoder. I don't think any other Sound card that OcUK stock has this function.

Ahh, so I have to get the one with DTS encoding? I had thought that my DTS box did all that work so I didn't need a card to do it for me. Looks like i'll get that one then.

Your DTS box does decoding not encoding. If you only want to watch films in DTS/DD then any soundcard with digital output should do the trick since the audio tracks on DVDs are already encoded. If you want to game in DTS/DD then you'll need a card that can encode into DTS/DD like the HDA mentioned above.
 
no it doesn't have it on-board. I've ordered now, I ended up going for the HDA Digital X-Mystique. It seems to have what I want and was a bit cheaper than the other.

it's old! erm... an MSI KT2 something?

I plan on upgrading soon, i've only just got a job and haven't started working yet so i'm waiting on funds to magically appear :D However, i've just spent 200 quid on a soundcard, keyboard, mouse and iMON Knob so it may be a while yet!
