Right off the bat, my one and only issue with the Nexus 5 is the battery. I hate it.

I have SlimKat running on it and it barely lasts a day on normal use. I hate it.

I love the size, I wouldn't want anything much bigger. I'm happy with the camera as it's only used for silly messenger pics.

I am not tied into a contract, I buy my phones outright. So, any suggestions?

If you like the Nexus 5 then you could go for the similar LG G3, which has a 3000mAh battery, but it all depends on your usage and how much you hammer the resources of course.

Also, Android L is supposed to be coming out Sometime in the next couple of months, which is supposed to have battery optimisation.

Turning off Sync extends my batter a lot as well.

The Sony Z3-Compact has outstanding battery life and is out towards the end of the month. Check the Z3-Compact thread for more info.

Another vote for the Z3c, stupid amount of battery, I think it would last most people 2 days, size is pretty nice too, screen is smaller thou. Theres not a huge amount happening in the 5" space, most devices are now 5.2" and quiet a bit bigger.

Battery life is great for me on my stock nexus 5.

Probably a problem with the ROM's, one reason why I don't mess with custom ROMs, always see people complaining about battery drain etc. over on the xda threads.

Make sure you turn off google location stuff.

And as said, battery life will get better with android L.

Don't get LG G3 if battery life is something that drives you insane. The HTC M8 is good but the camera is terrible.

Why? It's got a massive battery in comparison to most other phones and surely the higher res screen can't have made it that much worse over the G2 that will do me 2 days between charges.

The combination of a 5.5" display and 4k resolution seems to negate much of the advantage the 3000mAh battery brings. Battery life isn't bad on the G3. It's merely average. Average is still a massive step up from the Nexus 5 though.

Pretty much any current flagship is going to outlast the Nexus. If you want the very best battery life though, buy a Sony or a 6" Phablet (Lumia 1520, Ascend Mate 2, HTC One Maxx). For some reason Sony seem to be on a roll with battery life at the moment - the Z2 lasts ages, the Z3 Compact lasts even longer (and the Z3 is likely to fare very well too, based on pedegree).

There display sucks basically, its not that its 2k its how they went about it, samsung went 2k on the S5 A-LTE and has almost exactly the same battery. But the G3 is behind the G2, it has issues with brightness, throttles etc.

They really should have stayed 1080p.

Hmmmm, battery life seems good in the Sony Z3c... Plus, I found a deal with a free PS4... However, £60 a month for 24 months is bloody steep.

I'd say that you're not actually getting a free PS4 then. Sounds like they're just adding the price of the PS4 onto your contract. The Z3c shouldn't be any more than £30 a month really.

You never get anything "free" with a contract like this, you'll always be paying for it one way or another.

Seeing as the Z3c is only £350 from various sites there is probably some savings to be made if you buy outright and go for a sim only deal. I would look into it if I were you.

That PS4 isn't free it's just been added onto the price of the contract, oldest trick in the book. :)

I normally pay monthly rolling contract so I'm not tied in, hence me being a bit clueless about contracts. And yea, seems like the price includes the PS4 lol.

Oh well, been after one for a while but can't justify the cost to my self.

Of course, on a properly functional phone the battery life is relative to what you use it for, what network you're on and what your expectations are. I found that the N5's battery life was fairly disappointing with day-to-day use. Upgrading to a One M8 was a decent step for me; the battery life is good enough that it seems to last as long as I need it to.

However, since it's a fair bit bigger than the N5 I'd echo those recommending the Z3C here. Looks like a fantastic phone. There's also the upcoming 2014 Moto X if you'd rather have a stock Android feel.

There are pay monthly sim only deals, I am on one myself with Three so I am not tied in. Hence why I mentioned looking at the cost to buy the phone outright then get a pay monthly sim deal, could save you some money.
