Hello Chaps,

I got a Nikon D90 in late 2008, and my photography has been very lacking to say the least. For some reason visiting the fiddy threads has began my love. So much so.. I don't want to shoot anything but prime! Is this a strange philosophy or desire, or are there other prime photographers out there?

My plan is as follows.

Obtain;

Nikon 14-24MM (I know this isnt prime, but I dont want to be getting wide angle lenses for each length! Aim to have by March)

Nikon 28MM 2.8 AF (to be delivered soon)
Nikon 50MM 1.8 AF (Got it, started my love)
Nikon 85MM 1.8 AF (Aiming to buy by May maybe sooner) Purchased today instead of the 1.4
Nikon 135MM 2.0 AF (Aiming to buy by Aug)
Carl Zeiss 85MM 1.4 Planar for the future..

Then finally in September 2010 or around that time I aim to get the latest FX mid-range i.e. the next itteration of the D700

Is this sound logic, or am I limiting myself to certain benefits of other lenses? The way I see it is, the 135 should cover any Theatre photography I do, or concerts I go to. The 85mm should be fine for taking pictures of the baby just walking around parks etc, the length should give me enough room to take fairly good pictures. I know lumbering all of these would be much for a walk around photographer, but I am not one of those.

Any ideas or changes you have would be much welcome. Like the Nikon 85mm 1.4, is it as sharp as the 1.8.

Cheers

Dave.

It's not at all daft if it's what makes you happy. You'll find there are plenty of people using only prime lenses. I've tried it - I grew up with them, after all - but I find that I work better with a zoom, preferably a telephoto. I have as many primes as I do zooms but, out of them, the ones I use most are my 105mm & 150mm macro lenses (and the 105mm may go). I had an 85mm f1.8 but sold it recently - used to love it for stage work thirty years ago but just can't 'see' with it now. And the only reason I keep my 50mm f1.4 is to reverse on the front of a macro lens for high magnification.

I ended up getting the 85MM 1.8 today. After reading rockwell I wasn't convinced its the sharpest one to get. Plus I am more tempted by the Zeiss Plannar T*1.4 now for the future.

I have posted some 85mm shots in the pictures today thread. Its so awesome!

Each to their own I guess. I'm not sure I could cope with constant swapping of lenses (I'd budget for a second body before too long) but then again shooting with a fixed focal length does force more creativity sometimes as you have to look at where else or what other angle you could shoot from rather than just zoom in or out a bit.

Wouldn't do it myself but interesting none the less.
