I want to build a gaming rig but been out of the loop

Hi all, a long time since I was last here :) Firstly I appreciate that this will probably contain several questions that might belong better in the appropriate forums below and I will happily create new threads if a mod requests me to.

I built my first system about 13 years ago now. In 2007 I came back here for some advice as I hadn't been in touch with technology for just a year or so and ended up with some sound advice. I put together an Intel Core2 Duo/8800GTS gaming rig which was good for over three years, but then the GPU failed out of warranty and (for my sins  ) bought an Xbox 360 and split the rest down for spares to sell. I didn't really play many games after this, and got more into tinkering with cars than computers.

Well, four years later and I've had enough of making fast cars faster especially with the ever increasing cost of petrol. I've been playing the newer Battlefield games on my Xbox 360 and it just isn't the same as the PC ever was, I want to be back where I was before. I've been browsing this site for CPUs, mobos, graphics cards etc and I feel like a newbie all over again, I haven't got a clue! Since when have CPUs had integrated graphics lol?

Anyway, I want to build a system which is at the upper end and can be future proofed for at least a year or so. I like playing my games at max details if possible at 60fps (who doesn't ).

I'm constrained in the following ways, though will be flexible is possible:

  • Space and layout is an issue, so system must fit in a horizontal style ATX 'desktop' case. I don't really see this is as a problem
  • I want to be able to connect it to my 39" Panasonic HDTV over HDMI and run it at 1920x1080 for everything
  • I've got no particular preference for AMD or Intel, I'm happy to overclock a cheaper CPU but this rig won't be liquid cooled
  • Ideally I'd like to be able to use the integrated speakers in the television for the sound output
  • I haven't got a budget but if I can't afford it, it won't happen :D

I know this is massively subjective but I really don't know where to start  thank you

Welcome (back) :)

Can you be more specific about the size constraints? What are the dimensions we're looking at?

Hi, thanks :)

I'm aiming to fit into into my unit under the TV (to replace where my Xbox and DVD player currently both are) and the case could be a maximum of 47cm x 19cm x 38cm (Width x Height x Depth). It's not ideal but I could increase the depth by removing the unit's back panel completely - it's already got a large hole in for wiring which would also be ok for ventilation but as it is, it's limited to about 38cm.

This might be some help. Might be breaking the rules by posting this due to it having links to other websites. But my argument is the links are to US websites.

Most stuff is available on OCUK with a slight CPU upgrade.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclock ACX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (02G-P4-2774-KR) £269.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £167.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9) £89.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £71.99
1 x Silverstone Strider SST-ST45SF SFX Series - 450 Watt £66.95
1 x Corsair Hydro H60 V2 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler £59.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Red 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EFRX - OEM HDD £53.99
Total : £790.48 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Minus the case which isnt on OCUK. Maybe they could get it in?

And it look like the guy/gal went with two fans for the H60.

Why not micro-ATX?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone Grandia GD05 Desktop HTPC Case - Black (SST-GD05B USB3.0) £79.99
2 x Be Quiet! Shadow Wings Fan Mid-Speed - 80mm £9.98 (£19.96)

Hard to find an ATX that will fit (and sit properly horizontally).

I considered micro-ATX but I thought that generally this just added cost due to being smaller and more compact. If I went the micro route would I be constricted at all in my choice of graphics card etc? I will be going with just one single Bluray drive and a single large HDD so these aren't an issue space-wise.

Thanks for that. Is liquid cooling as a relatively cheap aftermarket option more the norm these days then?

What about a main board too? :p

I believe they do stock that case in the link you posted. Think it's this one:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone SST-RVZ01 Raven Mini-ITX - Black £69.98

Looks just the same. Yeah, just checked the Summary (of parts) in the list. It's mini-ITX and PSU needs to be SFX so that would add on to the cost, unless you can find appropriate SFX PSU's cheaper elsewhere.

Comparing the pictures in the link i sent and the case on OCUK, the Card slots are different. I think the Case on OCUK is a newer SFF version of the case and i'm not sure if you'd be able to get the Graphics in it.

I'm kinda new to watercooling myself but as far as I would imagine, in a more compact case, you're better off wartercooling the CPU. I could only imagine it'd get too hot otherwise. Plus it would be quieter not having a CPU cooler.

I think a decent CPU cooler would be a little cheaper or same price as the H60.

lol I was quietly expecting to do it for £600

Thanks for all the advice though.

It can be done cheaper - Fulax quoted the highest-end GPU and CPU. I have specced up the below which would still be a very good gaming PC. The Blu-Ray drive you want pushes the price up. this spec below does not include a WiFi card or OS but the case fits into your max dimensions:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 280X Gaming Edition OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £249.95
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £109.99
1 x Silverstone Grandia GD05 Desktop HTPC Case - Black (SST-GD05B USB3.0) £79.99
1 x Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA200) HDD £59.99
1 x MSI 970A-G46 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £57.95
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x Pioneer BDC-207DBK 8x BluRay ROM / DVDRW SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (OEM) £49.99
1 x SuperFlower Amazon 550W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply £49.99
Total : £728.84 (includes shipping : £12.50).

EDIT: Scratch that motherboard above, you need a Micro ATX board to fit in the case. Should be able to find one for similar price though
