I want to build a HTPC

I would really like to build myself an inexpensive HTPC as my wife and I enjoy watching a lot of tv shows and it would be great to have them all on the one system. Should I be looking at the older cpu sockets? How much power does a HTPC really need to have?

depends what you want it to do :

if you want to watch and play encoded High Def video you will need more power than if you just want to record a bit of tv and watch DVD's

I just want to use it to watch TV shows and ilms really, it will not have to do any recording, it would also be nice if I could hook it up to my stereo to play music.

It shouldnt cost that much all you basically need if you want to watch tv on your pc is a video card/tv tuner cards. There is a difference from them and graphic cards but some graphic cards have video in aswell. I think they stock them on Overclockers you should check them out.
