I have knowledge of HTML/XHTML/CSS, I have made several attempts at making sites in the past, although half way through them I simply gave up as I just couldnt really think of content or a reason to have a website.

Also I seemed to get stuck on the graphics side of it, creating decent banners, graphics for the page. But regards to layout, and certain features (PHP forms, Login scripts, and very basic SQL knowledge) I was good.

I would like to start getting back into it, this is for a number of reasons:

A) I would like my own personal space, somewhere to give people an overview of my work.

B) In my worklife I have created a lot of guides/tutorials on how to do stuff, I would like to create a login section for me so I can host these guides online so I can access them anywhere with the possibility to edit and update them online, eventually depending on matirial, certain guides I will make public.

C) I would like somewhere to host applications i use.

D) I would like to learn some more web development technologies

E) Iv had a lot of requests in the past to develop light with certain features for certain people who were willing to pay, but i have turned them all down for one reason, I didnt think I had enough experience.

I really want to give it a good bash this time. But I need to be able to plan and develop something thats not going to be a waste of time.

Those of you that have personal sites, do you get enough usage out of them or do they just sit there gathering dust?

Glad its not just me :) I think even if I just scrape enough content to build a light website for now, that will leave me room to easily update it when I think up more content in the future. But also I want to use it to learn as much as possible that will benifit me in the future.

My advice is start with a basic portfolio, even if it's just a basic gallery with some cool photos you have taken on it, or even setup a word press blog. It will get you back in the developing mindset :)

Best of luck!

It will support anything, i.e PHP, Java, whatever you like lol, and no banners!!

Thank you very much for your kind offer! Very nice of you :) I have hosting at the moment though through TSOHost. Just out of curiosity though, where is your server located? what server OS is it running etc? interested to know, is it your own server or are you reselling ?

Its my own server that im keeping im hosted with hostmonster, unlimted bandwidth and unlimited space :), its running linux, with apache 2.2.11 (Unix), can hold 1000 mysql db's and around 10k email's, and very good uptime never lets me down :)

let me know if your interested, Oh its a US server im quite sure.

Cool, will keep you in mind :)

I'm struggling to complete my own website. I have a full-time job and in my spare time, I'm usually busy with sites for other people ir just dealing with r/l. Every time I get back to my site, I hate it and want to redesign it!

For you, I would suggest a Joomla/Word Press/DotNetNuke (if you are into ASP.NET)/Whatever implementation initially. It gets you a presence on the web quickly and you can add various building blocks as you see fit (a Wiki for your articles etc). But when you have some spare time, you can polish old skills, or practice new skills by doing some custom sub-sites/sections.

yup, i find that when ive been working on a website for too long i start to hate it, and by the time im finished i wana re design it all from scratch.
