Hi all,

I want to go wireless.

At the moment I have my main computer in my room which is with blueyonder running fine via modem and NIC. I have a laptop I would like to set-up for using downstairs.

How easy is it to do this and what costs would be involved?
How would sharing my net connection disadvantage my speed on Pc (if they were being used at same time)

Do I need to have my PC on for it to work?

Thanks,

Its easy if you buy good kit with good instructions or software wizards and nothing goes wrong.

Theres is more than one way to connect reccomended one is

buy a cable router with wifi (£30+) and wifi cards (usb or pci or pccard type as needed) for each PC that needs wirelesss (laptop may have it built in, PC can use its existing NIC and a wire). You need a cable/dsl wireless router NOT an ADSL wireless router.

When its all running the router logs onto and keeps the connection to BY and either or both PC's can be on at the same time via wire and or wireless sharing your speed. Unless your downloading or sharing big files you will proably not notice the shared line.

Likley minimum cost is £30-60 for decent wifi router, £10-20 for usb or pccard wifi adapter for each PC. Buying all the kit from the same manufacturer is a good idea for a novice.

Sorry for late reply,

Im still trying to get my head around wireless (its seems so complicated)
So the laptop will definately need a WIFI card? How can I find out if it already has one (the laptop is about 2 years old, will it need replacing if it does? Is it an external card or something thats connected to the motherbaord?

When I buy the router, im guessing that the modem pluges into it and the the router plugs into the PC's NIC? (so the PC wont require a wirelesss card?)

Thanks

Depends. Some laptops have Wireless built in. Should be able to find out in device manager or just do a google on your laptop model number. If not then you can buy a PCMCIA wireless card for you laptop that should slot in the side somewhere. You've got cable broadband so you'll need a cable broadband wireless router, not ADSL. Modem would plug into router and router would plug into PC NIC. I've found that Linksys routers have a nice step by step setup guide to make it easier for beginners.
I can't mention competitors here, but give me your email and I'll mail you a few links to help you out.
