I want to leave Pipex - what do I do?

I have posted various threads on here about bad service from Pipex - slow speeds/no response/generally not giving a damn etc - so I've decided I want to leave and try something like ADSL24.

How do I do this though? Although I have been with Pipex since 2004, I renewed the contract in July of this year as I switched to a cheaper service. This means I have a contract with them until July next year. Incidentally, all the problems I have been having with them started in July!!

Anyway, I want out as soon as possible as the problems just go on and on and on, and I rely on having a good connection for my work.

On the ADSL24 site it says I need a MAC code from Pipex. How do I get this? It also says it's free to migrate, but won't I be liable for the remainder of the contract? That is what Pipex have told me when I have asked about cancelling. I even said I shouldn't be liable because the service has been so poor, but I'm not really that bothered if I do have to pay the remaining 8/9 months. Do I cancel first, then migrate, or just migrate?

Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

phone up pipex ask them what the score is with remaining contract, they will give you the mac code for migrating

Ring up and ask for a MAC code, you should get a courtsey call 48 odd hours later whereby some rude WATCH IT asks you for your details before telling you who he is.

Might want to note you'll have to pay off the remainder of your contract once you've completed migrating.

OK, I've requested the MAC code from Pipex, and they say I will have it in 3-5 days. I will have to pay the remainder of the contract, but I'm beyond caring now.

I am going to sign up with ADSL24. Will I get better speeds with them? Why would I have been getting slow speeds with Pipex?

Yes you'll definately get much better speeds, and service, ADSL24 are cracking, so thats a great choice, as are all Enta resellers really (im on UKFSN), you'll have been getting slow speeds with Pipex as they got taken over by Tosscali.:p

Once you get your MAC code pass it onto ADSL24, then just sit back for 7 days until your Pipex doesn't work anymore, then once it doesn't, just swap your username/password for your ADSL24 ones (may have to change a couple of router/modem settings as well), then just hit connect, you should only be without internet for about a minute, well depending on how fast you can type your new username/password in, and change a couple of settings if needed. :D

Then once your ADSL24 is on, cancel your DD for Pipex (if you had one set up for em), or ring them up informing them that your now not on them, as chances are they will continue billing you, and if so you'll have a right **** on getting em to stop, and giving you the money back.

I don't understand the technicalities behind why I will get better speeds though. Aren't all these companies just a go-between in the middle of you and BT? Do the ISPs actually do anything? That's what I don't understand. If it's all coming from BT, then won't it all be exactly the same as I have now with Pipex, just that I'll now be paying ADSL24 or whoever I go with? Therefore I'll still have slow speeds....?

Speeds wont be the same as Pipex (now Tosscali) as they have an FUP (Fair Usage Policy), and do traffic shaping (slowing down your connection), ADSL24 doesn't do any of that or have an FUP, they just have excellent caps, and even if you go over the caps they wont traffic shape you or nothing, they'll just charge you for the next package up. :)

When i was on Tosscali i was getting about 10k on downloads when they started the traffic shaping, and that was on a 2mb connection where i should have been hitting about 240k, so i migrated to AOL's 2mb and was getting 240k on them (as they were unlimited then), but when they got took over by Talk Talk, and introduced an FUP with shaping/throttling, i got off them onto UKFSN, so im now on MAX getting 6mb, with no FUP, shaping/throttling at all, so im getting me proper 6mb download speeds.

Farewell Pipex

I contacted Pipex for a MAC code expecting it over the phone there and then.
I was told it would come in the post within 5 working days afte they had generated it.It arrived after 3 days which amazed me,as i`ve read other people had requested the MAC code and basically Pipex had just ignored them, never sent the code or anything.
As usual i had the most ignorant customer services person in the world.
glad to be shut of them:)

I left Pipex last July for the wonders of ADSL2 with Be ... having heard all the Pipex horror stories I wasn't looking forward to the call to get the MAC address but the chap I spoke to was nice enough and had no problem requesting it for me. The MAC code itself came via email within 24 hours, (not in the post).

They're a complete shambles. Make sure you cancel payments immediately after you've got your MAC before they start to bleed you dry.

Yup, thanks to OFCOM's general condition 22 they now HAVE to give you a MAC within 5 days, even for someone still owing money / in contract. If they fail to comply they face a fine big enough to make even their eyes water.

Just a note about the miragtion itself; don't rely on the Pipex connection dying before switching to ADSL24's log in details. Often (if not mostly nowadays) the two connections will overlap, sometimes even for a day or two. Get the activation date from ADSL24 and try the login the day before, and at regular intervals on the day itself.

They often go live early (giving you "free" bandwidth), or if not you'll be able to switch your router to their connection on activation day even while Pipex hangs on the line. I only mention this as on my first migration last year I sat for hours waiting for Orange to die off my line and nothing happened. Turned out they were just overalapped - what a plonker I felt on the phone to my new provider's customer services :D

EDIT - Oh, and as was said above definitely cancel the payments to Pipex once you're migrated. Arrange to pay separately, either a lump sum or in installments - whatever works for you. Don't just leave it until they hit your bank for the full amount by Direct Debit (and 'accidentally' carry on taking monthly payments after that!).

I was billed the full whack the day they issued me my MAC code, despite having specifically asked to pay it off seperately once the line had switched. What if i hadnt gone ahead with the migration? Bah they make me angry.

Thanks for the tip about overlapping, I'm set to be activated with ADSL24 tomorrow... maybe I'll get lucky and find I've got decent internet when i get back from work :)

Is there a complete list of Enta resellers somewhere? As I couldn't find anything on Enta's site. And only see a few names listed on this forum, e.g. ADSL24, Titan, UK..., etc

I've requested a regrade to Pipex Max from my old Pipex 1000, but now wondering if I should just move. As not sure about 30GB total limit.

Correlation? Pay less = get less.

Over the years or so I have learned that if your internet is working don't get them to do anything to it, or your account, or they WILL mess it up.
