I want to save a .mov

...but for some reason I can't.

I'm trying to download and save the new Casino Trailer (1a) but I cannot find a downloadable version anywhere and if I try and 'save' the link that I find in the page source from the Apple site it just saves some weird 143 byte file.

it's copyrighted so you probably won't be able to download it. if you give me a link to it, i'll have a go; i've got an app that downloads elements of sites

This may be of use to you. The direct file URL is

http://images.apple.com/movies/sony_pictures/casino_royale/casino_royale-tlr1_h.640.mov

so you can open it in QuickTime Player.

I had a go using curl from a shell but it appears .mov files have some sort of copyright protection tagged on to them and the best I could get was a shortcut to the file.

You need Quicktime Pro to save .mov files normally. I have it and can save it directly from the Apple site.

I found this handy snippet of code the other day for use with Firefox's Greasemonkey plugin. It displays download hyperlinks for most of apple's trailers:
