Would the HIS excalibur x1600 be a better graphics card? As it is built on more recent architecture.

Big no no! The 128bit memory interface (as opposed to the 256bit on the X800/X850 series) really strangles the cards performance. The paper specs look all good but the performance is dreadful. The older X800/X850 will easily destroy the X1600, barring the SM3.0 support.

The X1600XT is marginally quicker than the 6600GT, & as such is not as fast as the X800GTO or any of the X800 cards above that.
