Hey Guys,

I got a PC in my study and instead of having to move it constantly from the study to the lounge so I can hook it up to the TV. I had an idea.

I was thinking of getting a very long HDMI cable about 10-15 meters. Then running this cable to the TV in the lounge. I think the TV supports HDMI 1.2 or 1.3. Currently when I move the PC into the lounge I connect it up using a VGA cable. I have a Nvidia 512MB dual head DVI 8800GT. So what I do is use the supplied DVI to VGA adapter.

My TV is a flat panel LCD 1366x768 resolution display. The other day I was gaming on it, when I plugged in via VGA using the adapter there was no need for me to do any configuring to get the resolution setup.

I usually run the PC in 1680x1050 when plugged to my monitor in my study. I did not have to do change any settings. The moment I plugged in the cable to my TV and switched on the PC the resolution changed automatically to 1366x768. Then from the desktop I went and loaded a game and went to the games option screen and saw it had also automatically changed the resolution to 1366x768. I thought I would have to change the resolution manually but it was all plug and play.

I heard it's not so much plug and play as you have to manually configure and create a preset so it automatically sets the correct resolution when gaming on your TV when you use a DVI to HDMI cable or a HDMI (same at both ends) cable using a DVI-HDMI adapter. Is this true? Or will I get the same effect as I do with my current VGA setup?

Also is it okay to run a 10-15 meter cable, will i lose any sound and picture quality?

Lastly, the reason I want to go with HDMI is as it carry's sound to the TV's speakers but I just realized that as I have a 8800GT it may not work as the card does not support HDMI audio, is this true? I only want to do 2 channel audio?

Then I plan on using a wireless mouse and keyboard so I can game in this lounge while my PC stays in the study, is this all possible?

Sorry for all the questions but I really hope you can answer them all!

any help much appreciated

Many thanks in advance

Many thanks for your replies guys,

Separate audio in! Is that HDMI for video and sound using standard L+R analogue cables?

Sorry got a little confused.

I am running XP home edition + service pack 3

I was thinking is it possible to get a DVI to HDMI cable that has on each end analogue L+R stereo input cables for plugging into the back of my TV. If the cable has these inputs on each end then I could just plug one L+R input into the soundcard ports and the other end into the TV ports. Is this possible? Anything like that. I don't know the correct name for this.
