Hey guys,

From late-October to Christmas I used Linux Mint on my primary computer - without another OS installed.

I loved it, however I had to move back to Windows and these are the reasons why...

Xorg.conf

I think this corrupted itself an amazing 5 times during the 'short' period I had Linux installed, I've had this issue happen on many other occasions when I've had a distro installed on a laptop.

It seems weird that such an advanced operating system would use such a primitive thing.

Lack of games

I read today that CS:S and CS:G are now on Linux, but it still lacks any of the 'big name' games like Football Manager and Battlefield (although I haven't even looked at the latter since November)

Performance dips

I noticed toward the end of the trial that I was seeing performance dips when running simple applications (Firefox, LibreOffice..) - is this just a issue with my installation or is it a normal thing?

To me it seemed that everything ran fine for the first few weeks of usage and eventually the OS gradually fell apart.
 
The xorg.conf problems you have are probably errant video drivers (imo), seen this a few times. Performance wise I've not really noticed any systemic problems with Mint and Debian. Firefox sucks donkey danglies though

How can I resolve video driver issues?

Just installed Linux Mint 14 as a direct replacement for Windows.

I need to get OpenVPN to work, my University really restricts my access!

Any chance of anyone helping me?
 
I always have a backup reference xorg.conf I use as my gold standard, i.e. I have it just in case things break.

I suspect you're using catalyst straight from the repository. The repository source may be setup to trigger --initial on aticonfig which will replace your xorg with some very standard setup.

There is plenty of guides re: openvpn, have a go and post when you get stuck. I would recommend you play with a virtual machine setup before breaking your setup.
 
Honestly, I'd wait 2 years.


  • X.Org will probably have been replaced with Wayland.
  • Open drivers are already pretty good and will only be better.
  • Valve will have made their games push.

That said, I use linux full time and I don't have an Xorg.conf, the open drivers do a good enough job, but I've not been playing many games to be fair.
