I was driving into work this morning on a dual carriage way when an Impreza to my right suddenly changed lanes and cut me up. I didn't have time to do anything but brake to avoid the idiot. He looked in his mirror and immediately began flicking me the bird and I responded by raising my arm in a 'what do you think you're doing?' type gesture.

The guy jammed on his brakes and stopped in the middle of the carriageway - horns ensued behind us. He then exited the vehicle and I thought '**** this' and drove off around him. Naturally he pursued me, passed me and then tried to cut me off again so I pulled over to the kerb, opened my door to make I was getting out and as soon as he was out of his car I was off.

This time he stayed back and followed me but when we came to a set of lights he pulled up and walked up to my door gesturing and swearing his head off. I ran the red (was turning left and the road was clear). I now knew I was dealing with a grade A nut job who had a point to make. I had no intention of a scrap - last time I retaliated it didn't turn out too well. So I continued driving for work hoping he'd get bored and go the other way but he wouldn't stop - at a round-about he drove into the oncoming lane and tried to block me in!

I'd had enough, so I called up Mr Plod. I was still on the phone as I drove into the work yard (I work for a transport company so big trucks, big forklifts & big drivers) and parked up in our loading area - the nut job followed me through the gate but didn't come all the way through the car park. The police said they were only a minute or so away so I waited in the car while this bloke sat in his by the gate facing me. A couple of drivers came to see what was up (cars aren't usually parked in the loading bays) and went to tell the guy to **** off.

When he saw them coming he turned around to leave, just as the police arrived and blocked the gate. I was now out of the car and off the phone - the guy sat idling in his car for a few seconds and then got out with his hands raised - it almost looked like an episode of cops (but without the drugs and guns). After they bundled him in the back of one of their cars an officer came to speak to me (I was now winding down in the office with a hot brew).

They took our statements, compared them and then came back to tell me he deeply regretted his actions and asked if I wanted to take this further. I raised concerns that he might retaliate and the officer that interviewed me said he doesn't seem the type. I said I would let it go and they sent him on his way.

Now several hours later, I strangely don't feel satisfied with the result. The guy was a lunatic and I can honestly say, I did not provoke that type of response. When he was sat by the gate watching me I thought he must be on drugs or something. I've been getting ribbed by the guys about it - I'm seen as a bit of a softy already because I work in the office (resident geek). In years gone by I would've been out there to give him a slap. I know I made the right choice letting it go, this nutter was so erratic with his driving he was probably running on pure adrenaline anyway. I just wonder, would you have handled this any different?

You must be doing something wrong to have this happen twice. Either that or NZ drivers are all complete nut jobs.

I think you made the right choice by not retaliating. You have a family to look out for. This guy was obviously a nutcase.

Perhaps you should have asked police to persue it for sure though.

I think you did the right thing for letting the police sorting it out, just out of interest, you dont have any doggy stickers on your car have you? :)

Nah, the 2006 jobby was in Ealing, London. I only moved down here 6 months ago... my general observation for NZ drivers is most of them are half asleep! We've been emphasising road sense to the kids ever since we arrived.

And dog stickers? My car is the most unassuming automobile on the road!

Wow I wish the cops would respond to a thing like that in a few minutes over here! :o

I suspect over here we'd just get laughed at!

Yeah and you'd probably get arrested for dangerous driving trying to evade him, while the pursuer gets counselling for the grief he's just been through ;)

Theres a section of road I'm having trouble with in cambridge coming off the A14 leading to my village. The first stretch of the B road is a 60, the second stretch after a roundabout is a 30. There is a 30 sign on the bend coming off the roundabout which is clearly marked though badly placed.

I get no end of trouble with people getting irrate. Or overtaking and pulling along side and mouthing off. Coming out of the village is even worse there is no national speed limit sign yet people still accelarate to 60 come across me doing 30 and start going nuts. The national speed limit sign isnt until the second section of road.

On tuesday a large looking pitbull in a range rover was giving me loaqds of abuse and followed me to my road turning. I had his number and fully intended to report him. Stupidly I realised turning into my own street wasn't the thing to do. Yet I still phoned the police who were very nice but suggested I wrote to my local MP or council so they could take action on that bit of road WTF.

Bloody hell I wish our police were that quick

You did the right thing though and game on for the drivers standing up for you. Big man didn't feel so big then did he?

You big jessy, running back to your big mates to hide behind and then grassing him up!
I would have gone postal on his ass, jumped out, ripped him through his window, knocked him to the floor, stolen his money, then ran him over in his own car (because it's better than yours).

Or maybe I've been playing too much GTA 4...

Kidding anyway mate, you did the right thing :)

There's no way I'd have let that go. I couldn't have cared less how much he claimed he deeply regretted his actions, he was a complete menace and could have gotten someone killed. You made the wrong decision in my opinion.

i had someone try to run me off the road a couple of months ago. Astra driver cut me up which required me to brake heavily... i gave him a blast on the horn and upon passing him later in the journey he sped up and attempted to push my car off the road... i pulled over after he turned off and gave the registration number to the police who said they'd keep an eye out for the car and to be on my way...

you did well to have them there in minutes!

I think you did the right thing there, I should really learn to be less confrontational in those sorts of situations.

I had a simular thing happen to me when a guy pulled over in front of me and got out of his car, unfortunately for him I got out of my car too and was twice his size and was coming towards him with my hands held out like I was going to grab him round the throat when I got close enough. Surprisingly he got back in his car and shot off I did not stop laughing for a good 10 mins.

I once heard a story of a road rage incident where the two guys got out, had some fisty cuffs and a wrestle in the middle of the road. After about 2 minutes of rolling around like homosexuals in the dust they realised how pathetic they were and they both got up, laughed at each other, sort of nodded and returned to their cars and both drove off.

Remember this for when it happens to you. Road rage is like getting into heated arguments on the internet.
