Was browsing the web leisurely then suddenly heard zzz...zzz...zzz... and a LOUD POP, jumped off my seat, unplugged the master plug and my heart sank thinking there went my Rampage, Q6600, 8800GTX, 5 HDDs, the whole lot.

Where the POP came from: my hardly one week old Corsair TX650

Still have my trusty old Seasonic 500W lying around, was weeping while doing a quick test then voila mobo lights came up like Xmas tree then the familiar "beep", phewwwwwwww...

I can't believe it, always thought Corsair was an excellent PSU maker! Any recommendation? I'm scared now :(

Yes, it's surge protected  Ironically, Seasonic also makes TX650 series but not as good as their own brand  I've used Seasonic S12-500W for 2 years without a single problem, not sure if I want to keep the RMA though.

I'm probably going to jinx myself now, but I have always had ****** psu's which came with the case and had them plugged into those normal cheapy extension cords, and not once had any hardware get bu****ed ;p

Surely 500W is more than enough for that rig?
Depends on the rails, some 500W have 32amps and over but my current Akasa 500W only has 24a, that said I did manage to run a 8800GTX a few months back perfectly fine, but since he has a Q6600 that's a fair bit more power so I might have had to upgrade.

If we assume it is an S12II 500w model then yes it should be ok, two 12v rails of 17A probably gives around 30A total (can't be bothered to do the calculation exactly) which would be fine.

I don't think that Seasonic are the manufacturers for the TX series of PSUs, they certainly are or were for the HX series but I think Channelwall make the TXes.

gee3000 you might want to remove the swearing from your post.

nop Corsair series TX are not made by Seasonic:)
only the HX series are( HX 520/HX620)
the VX and TX series are made by CWT of Taiwan:)

Channelwell make great psu's. so do seasonic. you will still get the odd failure with both. that said yes, *** seasonic-built Hx series are better built. but they both carry 5 year warranties. that should be enough to convince you either is a good buy.

I have done extensive research before buying this one and everyone is saying that TX650s are built by Seasonic (all the review sites including silentpcreview.com), it looks very much the same like my Seasonic down to the cable sleeve, heatsink etc... TX750s are built by Channel Well Tech and cables are not fully sleeved and look "different".

True, my old 500W PSU is enough (I ran it for months) but I don't want to run it at full capacity under full load as it gets hotter and noisier, want a bit more extra head room so to keep it quiet and cool. I'm planning to clock Q6600 to 3.6 as well so a new PSU is needed. Still haven't decided yet, should I give Corsair another go?
