I was thinking of getting a steam deck for some hand held gaming, the main game I would probably play would be world of war. But have noticed it’s not and the list of games that work on the steam deck. I have also looked at the Lenovo Legion GO S and the Asus ROG Ally as these are quite close in price to the steam deck and run windows 11 and I don’t want to spend loads on one, as I won’t use it enough to warrant spending lots. My steam library is not bad, I have 250 games in it, also I was wondering if anyone has used one of the devices as a media play for playing films? And if so are they any good?

Does anyone play World of warships on the steam deck and if so, how does it play. From what I have googled it seems to be a bit of a mix bag of experiences.

Also has anyone tried the Lenovo Legion GO S and the Asus ROG Ally and if so what do they think of them?

Most recent report is that it works:

(protondb is a great resource for whether games work well on SD)

Ultimately it's 1280x800 resolution so films will play back in HD Ready resolution which isn't awful. Better than a DVD and worse than full HD, but the screen size may be forgiving.

I've no idea how battery life is for media playback.

Steam deck is getting long in the tooth these days, all the handhelds from this era are on the cusp of replacement models.

The original Ally is in the same boat, if you can get a good deal, say around £300-£350, it’s still a good buy but I wouldn’t spend more. The battery life is pretty terrible mind.

Have a look at the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X, it’s a step change in performance although I expect the price to be significantly more than the £350 the original Ally is available at now.
Valve will need to respond at some point with an updated steam deck.

One thing to think about is if you want to play ‘competitive’ or esports type games, the anti-cheat systems some of these games use do not play nice with gaming on Linux.

Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like it's not a great time to buy one of those devices. I don't do competitive gaming, I am a casual game and play with friends and son a few times a week.

To spend spend anymore that £450 for me would be a waste of money, I'd rather put that towards my next graphic card

I think if you're looking to buy a Steam Deck for media consumption, it's a bit of a waste of money. It's a bit of a hefty bit of kit when a phone (which you already have) is likely almost as good. Along those lines, it's not really the best for modern games now; there are a lot of compromises to get most of the latest games running on the device.

Having said that, I absolutely love mine and use it primarily as an emulation machine + PS4 - era games. If you're not sure how a game runs, check youtube and see if it suits your requirements.
